A Presidential motorcade SUV. Protesters better watch out if they try to egg the limo.

This vehicle is not mean to give you tremendous ballistic protection. The point of this vehicle is not to stay put and battle with local forces using small arms, heavy machine guns and or rockets. It is designed to move quickly and put out as much suppressing fire as possible (hence the mini-gun) should an ambush occur in order to allow the high value asset to escape from the scene fast. It is a compromise for when you cannot travel around in an up-armored Humvee or for when you need (or for when it's better to be) a little more discreet.

Sorry to say Blair might have once walked to the house but the last time I saw him (2 years ago mind) there were 7 cars in the motorcade - his car; 2 police; 2 range rovers (did someone mention Hereford?) and an MPV.

Not bad for a 200 meter ride from Number 10!

Oh and the whole of Parliment Square was sealed off and most of Whitehall - I was coming out of the Treasury at the time so was inside the cordon and got a pretty good view.

Strange as I saw him come out of Downing St in January with just one police outrider?
But saw him last year walking to Parliament for PMQ's, it was a nice sunny day though.

I've been unfortunate enough to see two different presidential motorcades. Bill Clinton drove by my office on sunny afternoon and he the folks who were held up at the corner, waiting to cross, were patient and understanding and the presidential hand came out of the window and waved to the crowd. We even got a glimpse of the presidential bulbous nose. There were a few cars in front of the limo, a few in back. Pretty cool sighting of a president (until I got to meet Bill and the mrs last summer)

Last year I was held up 2 blocks from my apartment, trying to get home and had to wait a solid 40 minutes (or walk about half a mile out of the way to go around the blockades) for the Bush motorcade to come thru. This time around, a huge motorcade came thru. a few cops on motorcycles, a few cop cars, a ton of black suvs, all identical, most with windows open a crack and yes, the tips of some kind of gun was present in these cracks. either two or three suvs had the flags on them indicating the POTUS was inside. Decoys and a real one. The mets were playing the Cardinals in the playoffs. I was late and annoyed and I was "talking" with a cop about how this hold up was unfair and a violation of my rights etc. he said there was nothing he could do about it and he agreed and he said "worst part is, nobody is here to see him. if went in a convertible, with no security detail, he'd go unnoticed and anyone that did notice wouldn't give a damn. it's New York. we don't care about these things."

sure enough, the caravan went past and everyone was thrilled. that he was gone.

It's against the law to throw anything at a moving vehicle - egg, water balloon, ketchup package, bomb, etc. Doesn't matter whether the president is in the vehicle or not.

Is it against the law to mow down your own citizens?

I have issues with this thread.

The title is very misleading. No where in that video is "egg throwing" mentioned.

These vehicles were not built to go after protestors. They're built for DEFENSE, to protect the person inside incase of a real attack, not protoestors.

Elevatedone....

oh yeah and the "mod" in me has to remind... watch the one liners and please stay on topic.

carry on.

I think this is the big difference between US and UK.
Blair might have been a disliked leader and a somewhat embarassing British figurehead,at least he wasn,t too afraid to travel in a relatively normal fashion.

The M-134D mini-gun is manufactured by my friend and fellow pilot Mike Dillon. Mike is a retired TWA pilot and former air tanker pilot. He is also a genius with any kind of gun and or reloading equipment.

Mike starting Dillon Precision many years ago and is the most succesful producer of reloading equipment.

Several years ago he manged to purchase the manufacturing rights to the General Electric mini-gun which never did operate all that well.

Mike has developed the gun into a flawless piece of weaponry and through a little luck and maybe a little subeterfuge got his model of the mini-gun designated the M-134D (for Dillon).

The unit you are looking at in the video is a M-134D with a GMC Yukon XL Pursuit mounted under it. 25 were made for a middle eastern country. (I am not sure if the country has been publically identified or not so I'll hold off on the name.

The upgrades include suspension, brakes, battery w/armor, rod-guard tire inserts, Safoam fuel tank, computer and fuse box armor, tactical style (pursuit) interior door panels, aluminum ram front bumper, adjustable door hinges, tailpipe mesh, under-body fire suppression systems, positive fresh air intake lockout and a few more extras.

There is 5/16th inch steel perimeter armor and 1/8th steel armor in the roof and floor. (Armor Holdings did this mod.)

The Yukons are powered by the 6 litre Vortec.

The cost? If you have to ask you can't afford it.

Mike is an accomplished pilot and has a hangarfull of really neat airplanes including a Super Pinto, T-34 and Hughes 500 all of which I have flown, dog-fighting with Mike, his sons and a few Air Force pilots.

Mike has a gorgeous home in Scottsdale which I stayed at after my talk (about flying in southeast Asia) at Davis-Monthan AFB last year at the Classic Jet Aircraft Association convention.

A short story to provide some background.

I am the operations manager for a small security company here in Melbourne, specialising in Major Events and Crowd Control.

We were lucky enough to score a contract to provide security at one of Melbourne's 2006 Commonwealth Games venues.

During the games we had several foreign dignitaries show up, most were provided a motorcade from Victoria Police.

Out of all the motorcades I saw, including our own prime ministers, most involved no more than 10 vehicles. That is until Tony Blair showed up with a motorcade of 35+ vehicles, plus plain clothes military dispersed through the crowd as well as the VicPol chopper constantly overhead.

Prime Minister Howard himself only travels with a visible 8 man Federal Police security detail.

Impressive video, if you're into that sort of thing.

I do see an obvious flaw with the design logic of this vehicle, however.

If its stated purpose is to lay covering fire while in high-speed evasion, the LAST thing in the world you want to depend on is a heavy, short-wheelbase vehicle with a high center of gravity.

Anyone rember the Ford Explorer scandals?

SUV's such as the Explorer and the GMC Yukon are top-heavy and prone to rollover under evasive manuevers performed at high speed...high speed in their case to be anything over roughly 35-40MPH.

Now, you take an unstable platform, such as a typical SUV, and you add weight for things like armor plating, and what you get is a brick balanced on the point of a pencil! Even if you beef-up the suspension to NASCAR levels of stiffness, you've still got a truck that's not even as stable as Robert DeNiro's character in Taxi Driver!

Then you essentially strap a man, a shooters' platform, and a Minigun to the roof of this contraption? Above the already ridiculously high center of gravity? Try to turn this thing at anywhere near evasive speeds and I got one word for you...

TIMBER!!!

Why even have a man outside to aim and fire the dang gun? Do it by remote. You'd avoid having a security asset exposed to possible hostile action (and thus becoming an additional liability!), and save hundreds of pounds of mass (man and man-rated support platform) in the one area where you want as little excess weight as possible; above the vehicle's CG.

Heck, just mount a remotely controled version of that minigun to the roof of an armored BMW 5-Series or M-B E-Class Touring (station wagon), and you'd have a 150MPH gunship that could actually handle a turn at better than walking speed.

No need to throw rotten eggs at vehicles. The stench of this Presidency has wafted mightily over the nation and Constitution. Just all hold your nose as he is driven by.

This is pathetic.

Nothing like seeing a power hungry fascist being this scared of the people that he's supposed to be helping.

And therein lies the problem...

A misleading title, and the lack of due diligence... Never mind me... I'll just go over to the corner and pine away for the good old days of "Deny Ignorance..."
