At least 20,000 police surveillance cameras are being installed along streets in southern China and soon will be guided by sophisticated computer software from an American-financed company to recognize the faces of suspected criminals and detect unusual activity.

Starting this month in a port neighborhood and then spreading across Shenzhen, a coastal city of 12.4 million people, residency cards fitted with powerful computer chips programmed by the same company will be issued to most citizens

Security experts describe China's plans as the world's largest effort to meld cutting-edge computer technology with police work to track the activities of a population and fight crime, but they say the technology can be used to violate civil rights.

Looks like China is welcoming Big Brother.

I share the idea that "those who would give up essential
liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve
neither liberty nor safety."

I was hoping for some input on the
American-financed company:

China Public Security Technology, the company providing the technology. Incorporated in Florida, China Public Security has raised much of the money to develop its technology from two investment funds in Plano, Texas: Pinnacle Fund and Pinnacle China Fund. Three investment banks, -- Roth Capital Partners in Newport Beach, Calif.; Oppenheimer & Co. in New York; and First Asia Finance Group of Hong Kong, -- helped it raise the money.

Now what I found weird, at least for me, was when I
went to check China Public Security's stock on yahoo,
and their business summary is as follows:

China Public Security Technology, Inc. provides consulting services in the commercial printing industry. It provides various printing services, including black and white, two or four color, full color, design services, layout services, consulting...

If they are providing sophisticated computer software,
such as facial recognition systems, etc, why does their
business summary say they provide consulting services
in the commercial printing industry?

To be fair, China is pretty Big Brother-ish anyway, in terms of civil liberties, cameras are the least of their problems.

Individual freedom is not exactly high on the PRC's list of priorities.

I was just hoping one of the more informed members
could provide some insight on that American company.

They obviously provide security systems:

20,000 police surveillance cameras, the system to run them,
residency cards with microchips, facial recognition software, etc..
The whole sha-bang-a-bang.

Yet they're being traded on the market as a provider of
consulting services in the commercial printing industry, specifically:

"various printing services, including black and white, two or
four color, full color, design services, layout services..."

Am I missing something here?
Help deny my ignorance.

"Oh but if the citizens are not doing anything wrong then it's ok!, What have they got to hide!?", etc, etc

Well take a good look because that's the situation that we could potentially be in soon enough.
