Kenneth, whats the frequency?

Now, right up front, I know that conspiracy theorist have long sisnce wondered about the attack on newsman Dan Rather all the while rather miffed about why two goons would attack and beat him..all the while calling him Kenneth and asking him for the frequency. Was this a code? Did they believe he and the rest of the CFR were using mass media for brainwashing? fnord Or did they believe in some subliminal wave affecting human consciousness had been developed? (see the threads on HAARP)

Who were these guys and did they represent a group who had learned the truth? Hardly seems the way to an organized interrogation does it? Does he have the frequency and if so what is it?

In 1997, the mystery of the "Kenneth" incident appeared to be solved. When the New York Daily News published a photo of William Tager, Rather identified him as his assailant. "There's no doubt in my mind that this is the person," Rather said. Tager is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence for killing an NBC stagehand outside the Today show studio. Tager apparently was convinced that the news media was beaming signals into his head. He demanded that Rather tell him the frequency of the signals. As to why he referred to Rather as "Kenneth" remains a mystery.

yes, i remember hearing about this. he was labeled as demented, case closed. haven't heard anything about it for a while though. wonder if there really was a frequency?

"The published reports of "two well-dressed men" who accosted Rather, one of them demanding to know, "Kenneth, what is the frequency?" becomes, in the revised version, "An agitated man [who] directed a stream of near-gibberish at him, including the question `What's the frequency?' and a word that Rather told police sounded like the name `Kenneth.'"

The merging of two carefully identified assailants badgering Rather repeatedly with the strange query, "Kenneth, what is the frequency!" into one gibbering madman slurring his words is explained away by the Daily News: "Some news accounts at the time referred to two attackers, but Rather said he had told police it was just his impression that the attacker was accompanied by another man. Only one person actually beat him."

The plot thickens..

"Rather was confronted about 11 p.m. while walking on Park Avenue. When he tried to walk away, he was punched from behind and knocked to the ground. The attacker then chased Rather into a building and kicked him several times in the back.

At the time, it was thought Rather might have been a victim of mistaken identity. But Dietz told the newspaper that Tager admitted attacking Rather after running into the newsman by chance and recognizing him.

Tager was in New York City at the time because he mistakenly thought he had an appointment with a female television personality to talk about ending the hostile messages, and had just been stood up when he saw Rather.

''It was a chance encounter with someone from a target victim class,'' Dietz said. In fact, Tager told the psychiatrist he had considered doing more harm to Rather but had decided against it.

Tager, 49, of Charlotte, N.C., later pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the slaying of stagehand Campbell Montgomery and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Tager was trying to take an assault rifle into the street-level ''Today'' studio at Rockefeller Center and opened fire when Montgomery pointed him out to police.

The district attorney's office said charges won't be filed in the Rather attack because the statute of limitations has run out. Tager's lawyer, John Esposito, told the News there are still questions as to whether Tager was involved.

CBS spokeswoman Kim Akhtar said Rather didn't want to talk further about the incident.

Certainly it wasn't a career highlight for Rather, who has anchored the ''CBS Evening News'' since replacing Walter Cronkite in 1981.

Dietz said he believes Tager never called Rather ''Kenneth,'' and Rather has said he's not certain that was the word he heard."
