You may as well add Ritalin, oxycontin, dexamphetamine etc. to the list. Take oxycontin, a drug that is arguably, as strong as or stronger than heroin, when abused. It seems that it's okay to sell smack when you're a massive private pharmaceutical company such as Purdue, the manufacturer of oxycontin. Deep pockets don't hurt, along with an incentive based marketing program. As it is with the range of ADD amphetamines. Apparently, ADD is quite a complex disorder to diagnose, requiring specialist training, yet we have G.P's (general practitioner) handing them out willy nilly.

I know someone who had been diagnosed with ADD, by a G.P. in adulthood and prescribed amphetamines. When he eventually questioned the doctor about it, on his fathers advice, the doctor got defensive and suggested that his father had ADD and should get on the med's, too ! Only thing was, the croaker had never met the guys father, who actually is a retired professional that has written several books. Forget the gate, the horse has already bolted and the monkey's got a grip.

I know this has turned into a (sort of) off-topic rant, my apologies, suffice to say, what you call malt liqour over there, we call beer over here.

Anyway, a gateway implies going somewhere, presumably heroin, meth, crack abuse being the destination. Which line might you end up in, if you are wrongly given ADD drugs, or you're prescribed too many oxycontin, for that sports injury? A beer in the park, or a doctor's reassuring hand (writing the script)?

To me it looks like more a comparison of people that mix substances.
And those that don't

Just heading off the "I got stoned and I missed it..." comment's before they occur, if at all possible, so that every other post is not deleted followed with warnings.

This study, suggests that heavy constant cheap alcohol use, coincides to heavier constant other drug use, with cannabis being the largest choice of secondary drug.

Anyone who has ever been a smoker of tobacco knows that you can smoke a pack of cigarettes in one four to six hour drinking occasion, in comparison to the pack in a sixteen hour sober day.

I'm pretty sure I've witnessed a weeks supply of herb get burned during alcohol fueled partying as well, but I wasn't exactly taking notes on that ten years ago.

I'm absolutely positive that any and all junkies I've known who shot up, popped pills, or snorted things, were primarily alcoholics to begin with. The heroin addicts in NYC were never without some kind of bottle of alcohol in hand. The pill poppers at my workplaces chased their poison with beer. The coke users never did it without hitting the liquor store first.

argh...memories of the college girls mixing beer with Rohypnol on purpose just flash backed...I think I'm going to vomit. That has to be one of the most disgusting pathetic sites I've ever seen. Perfectly sweet wonderful young woman, turned into barely functioning zombies by their own choosing.

About ADD and Ritalin.
The first I ever heard of Ritalin was one night in January 1998.
My new room mate and I were on our way to a party of his coworkers, when he asked me if I'd ever done Ritalin. I didn't know what it was and he told me about ADD and how at age 12 his friends started crushing and snorting Ritalin and how it was just like doing speed. I was disgusted.

I actually moved out of that apartment in under a month because this guy was a raging alcoholic, to the point of constantly begging me to go to the bar with him or to the liquor store and buy beer, drunk everyday and then grubbing money, food, you name it.
Then pawning his stereo and claiming it was stolen, actually calling the cops and screaming in the yard at 3AM to make it look legit. A few months after I moved out he was run out of town because the police had a warrant for his violating a restraining order from stalking some fourteen year old girl over the phone.

Just months later, my newest room mate was the next ADD person I met who was treated with Ritalin as a child, he managed the liqour store and was a raging alcoholic, he was a "re-covering" crack addict, who relapsed hard core during drinking binges.
For the few weeks I lived with him I was very afraid of his crack habit, mean drunkness, and loaded AK-47.

Winners don't use man made drugs.
