I almost didn't post this because, well, you'll see.

I noticed an increase in nightmares in the last year, and tried to think of what was "causing" it.

The day after a nightmare I would right down as much as I could remember about the day before. I did this a total of 5 times, and then I noticed the similarity. Yes, I didn't pick it up until the 5th. Anyways, all 5 times, I had eaten peanut butter toast before bed.

Laugh if you want, but it is true!

So,

Advil: No.
Peanut butter toast: never at night for this girl.

I can honestly say I don't think I've ever had a nightmare the same day I took Advil (ibuprofen).
In fact, one day after vacuuming a car, I had some iced tea with mint, and took ibuprofen because the dust and smell from the car always gives me a headache. I felt extremely cheerful! I'm almost never happy for no reason, but I was then!

I think the pain you are experiencing
is causing the nightmares.
