The U.S. really isnt on friendly terms with countries that could possibly step up to the plate, and challenge us.....(China, Russia trying to get back in, on a smaller level Iran)

during the cold war, the U.S. made many advances quickly trying to out manuever the Russians:
Space travel
the moon landing...(believe what you want)
Sattelites
ICBM's
long distance supersonic bombers
high altitude recon jets: super sonic and not
and others that i cant think of right now....(feel free to add)

my guess is that in the past 18 years or so since the fall of the USSR...the U.S. has not been able to get much funding for newer stuff of what we already have, or improving once black ops missions....
i know at the downfall of the Cold War the RC-135, down classified most of it's equipment and mission in order to continue recieving most of it's funding for it's once black ops patrols

if the U.S. had another competitor, maybe it feels that, that would spike up the innovation, and also allow more "blind" funding of projects...

any imput would be greatly appreciated
