NEWS: Radioactive Nuclear Waste trucks headed through Albuquerque

Topic started on 13-1-2004 @ 08:17 PM by ktprktpr

Radioactive Nuclear Waste trucks headed through Albuquerque As of now the begining of many (100s) trucks carrying radioactive nuclear waste passed through congested interstate 40. These truck will be passing schools and well populated areas.

What I find disturbing is that:

1. No one knows when these suckers are going by.

2. These trucks have NO safety escort. If one tips over, it's like a dirty nuke.

3. The city has no contigency plan for this sort of then, yet they allow this to happen. Talk about Code Orange.

Anyway, the city council is hoping to do something and present requirements (after the fact, mind you) on Jan. 21st.

nm.indymedia.org...

Edit- I must've driven by these trucks one to many times myself beacuse i've edited this post 3 times to correct English errors..

likes like ATSNN knew it was bad news too and tried to conceal the city. It's amazing cause I'm going tobe going down interstate 40 in several days myself. The article also said that interstate 40 is often closed because of huge pileups and the like....

Having lived in Roswell i can add a few scary details to this story. I-40 in Albuquerque is indeed a traffic nightmare. from there they are going to head south about 200 miles over thankfully newly rebuilt roads and to a bypass around Roswell and on south another 130 miles to Carlsbad. Believe it or not the waste site is in a natural cave that is part of the "Carlsbad Caverns" network. The caverns are a huge tourist destination and are formed in limestone. The people of the area have fought these shipments for years and have apparently lost.
As i sidenote, many years ago i worked as a security guard at a nuclear reactor in New York, when they were doing a shutdown in the plant they would ship the spent fuel rods along the New York State Thruwayto a waste site. As the trucks would leave the reactor property they would always set off the radiation dectectors that the plant employees would have to go through as they got off work. these sensors were at least 100 feet from where the trucks would go through the gate. Keep an eye on that truck next to you....

Wait, are you saying that this waste is going to be dumped in the Carlsbad cavern system? Can you provide some kind of link or reference to verify this. I can't believe this! (Please don't take this as I can't believe YOU...I can't believe THIS.)
