Archaeologists discover 8-million-year-old forest in Hungary

BUKKABRANY, Hungary (AFP) - Archaeologists have found an eight-million-year old forest of cypresses, well preserved and not fossilised, in Bukkabrany in north eastern Hungary.

"The discovery is exceptional as the trees kept their wooden structure, they neither turned into coal nor were petrified," Tamas Pusztai, the deputy director and head of the archaeological department at the local Otto Herman museum who oversaw the excavation, told AFP.

Thought that was pretty awesome. The tree's remained WOODEN for 8 million years! Isn;t that amazing? i mean, what are the chances?

Edit: Sorry, forgot it wasn't a news post and missed the source link

That is very cool.

A friend of mine recently sent me pics of the huge crystals found in the mines in Mexico a few years ago. I had never heard of them before that.

The quartz crystals that look like they are the size of small houses? Yeah, we saw some pictures of those in science this year, they were pretty awe-inspiring.

That forest should be immediately classifed as a protected area, historical landmark and not let anyone in before the lumber people get there or some smoking tourist who will accidentally cause a forest fire. If this forest was just 'discovered' then I wonder what new species they will find. After that find in New Ginea (sp?) where the animals had never been in contact with humans before I think finds like this are very interesting.

that was some super-mega sandstorm that buried those
swamp dwelling Cyprus Trees in 6 meters (~18 ft) of sand.
and resulting in a type of tree preservation

sounds like there was a dramatic 'climate shange' back then too...

(can't blame that on man caused greenhouse gasses Mr Gore)
