France confirms Libya arms contracts: Arms for Nurses?

PARIS (AFP) - France confirmed Friday that Libya has reached a major arms deal with the European aerospace giant EADS, the first since a weapons embargo was lifted on Tripoli in 2004 and a potential source of embarrassment for President Nicolas Sarkozy.

French Defence Minister Herve Morin confirmed Friday that a letter of intent had been signed for the sale of Milan anti-tank missiles and a radio communications system worth, according to a Libyan official, 296 million euros.

Coinkydink? I think not. Its shades of the Arms for hostages deal that plagued the Reagan administration. Its pretty clear that this was offered to Moamer Kadhafi in exchange for releasing the nurses and other health care providers it was holding for life.

THe new French president has made no bones about his willingness to meddle in industial affairs, and confirms my deeply held belief that companies like EADS and its sub. Airbus is simply an elaborate jobs program for the EU and more specificaly France.
