Computer researcher Don Mitchell used pictures originally taken by two soviet space probes, and using todays digital technology enhanced them to show the best pictures of Venus so far.Soviet probes landed on Venus between 1975 and 1981, with 4 sending back images.
Venus is meant to be about as "hot as an oven", at around 490 deg Celsius.

There's been an amazing amount of attention being brought back to space, it looks like the space race is on again, but why? Is it more than propaganda?

There is more attention being placed on the space now days to put the space program in a better light since its fall from glory. Also, if the space program is bringing in the good news then all the bad news from the war of terror may be offset.
