Military Adviser Nominee Says Military Will be In Iraq Years Not Months

news.yahoo.com

Navy Adm. Michael Mullen, picked as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned U.S. lawmakers unhappy with the conflict against seeking a rapid pullout from Iraq, saying it could turn the country into a "caldron."

While prudence dictated planning for an eventual pullout, Mullen said that under one scenario it could take three to four years just to halve the 160,000 U.S. troops now in Iraq.

"I do think we will be there for years, not months But I don't see it (Iraq) as a permanent."

This is more or less in agreement with what I've thought about the issue.

Yes, we do need to leave, but for several reasons, including logistics and
the sheer amount of people and equipment we have there, we can't
just pullout in a few months.

The problem with Iraq is there is'nt much of a sociopolitical middle-ground
on the issue, you either have people on the right wanting to stay indefinitely
until the we have 'victory', whatever that means or those on the left wanting
everyone home in under a year or the fastest time possible.

I think that's the whole problem here to, you can't do either, the only
workable path is the middle-ground.
