found a turtle in my backyard!

Theres been a turtle in my backyard for the past few days. Its a small turtle, i think its a box turtle. Turtles, not to my knowledge, do not live in my area. So, i think it might be someones pet. Anyway, i don't know what to do with it or if i should try feeding it or not. Im assuming it isn't wild so it may need my help.... any suggestions?!?

Is there any parks or ponds nearby your place? Maybe let it go somewhere it can be out of harms way.

There is a park right behind my fence.. but its a pretty public park and i think that it would be more in harm at the park, i kinda wanna keep him in my backyard to make sure hes safe. I'm just not sure if hes wild or not, if hes wild id rather let him go. Enjoise, you live in NY, do we have wild turtles anywhere?!?! Im in Mid Nassau BTW.

By park I meant a nature park or somewhere with woods and water, not a playground sort of park...wouldn't want little kids chuckin' it or something...:shk:

And yeah..I've seen turtles around. Usually by ponds or streams.

Yeah i guess i can take him for a ride and find somewhere... but where i live its really just playgrounds (its pretty suburban). I might see if i can find some turtle food and keep him around for a bit, my dogs love him haha.

Hikix try a google search to see if you can find out what kind it is.Then you will know if it was a pet or wild.You may also find out what it eats. Good luck!

If it is an Eastern Box Turtle it is native to New York. Make sure that's what he really is then feed him what it says they eat. If he found his way into your backyard, I imagine if he decides he doesn't like it in there he can get out. If you like him, I don't see any reason to remove him, try and make sure he has all he needs, and he'll probably stay.

yup.. thats the turtle. I wonder if he really is wild. Im gonna go to the pet store this week and see if i can get some food for him.

i want a turtle in my backyard

I was given a turtle for my 30th b'day. He's 12 years old now and a great pet. Mine likes mealworms, crickets, grasshoppers etc. But check out what they prefer from your local pet store.
Do you have a water source in your backyard as it may need one for protection from predators.
Hope he hangs around, their pretty cool animals.

We have a box turtle that my daughter found and so far we have found that he will eat snails, mill worms, grubs and if we run out of those items he will eat water softened dog food. I built a mall box out of landscape timber for him so he can't get away.
