U.S. Plans New Arms Sales to Gulf Allies

The Bush administration will announce next week a series of arms deals worth at least $20 billion to Saudi Arabia and five other oil-rich Persian Gulf states as well as new 10-year military aid packages to Israel and Egypt, a move to shore up allies in the Middle East and counter Iran's rising influence, U.S. officials said yesterday.

The arms deals, which include the sales of a variety of sophisticated weaponry, would be the largest negotiated by this administration.

Well that didn't take long. Within days of Iran announcing it would purchase 250 fighter-bombers and 20 refueling tankers from Russia, the US announces a huge arms sale and aid package to six friendly Mid East nations, the bulk of course going to Israel.

Will this never stop? We supplied arms to Afghans in the 80's, they were used against us. We supplied Tomcats to Iran in the &0's, not a smart move either. What is this, just a maneuver to keep the war machine rolling?_javascript:icon('')


One would think that we would smarten up and stop supplying arms to people who are going to be irresponsible and let them fall into the wrong hands. Sure, the Saudi's may be allies, on paper, but didn't we establish that the bulk of the 9-11 hijackers come from there?

Well, I guess if they didn't have the weapons to fight us with, we would win and have to come home. God forbid that should ever happen!

Very true. We're giving advanced weapons to these countries, arming them all to the teeth, and then setting fires all over the place in the ME.

The CIA created the nightmare in Iran in '53 when they overthrew the Prime Minister, who wanted to nationalize the oil fields. Pushed the Shah to become an autocrat, and boom, the revolution and the ayatollahs. It's our arrogance and meddling which created this mess. And we just keep upping the ante.
