This just happened. The little scroll bar on the tv just came on with "Breaking News".

There seems to be explosions going off under a street near Detroit.

www.wxyz.com...

Explosions under 13 Mile road in Madison Heights are blowing manhole covers into the air.

It's happening just west of I-75.

Police have blocked off 13 Mile from Stephenson Highway to John R.

The traffic signals at 14 Mile and Stephenson Highway have been knocked out. Other signals in the area have also been affected

It's not clear if anyone has been hurt, or what caused the explosions.

Nothing on CNN or any of those bigger news channels. Just local stuff so far.

Didn't a steam pipe in that area blow up recently?

Could it be that?

Yeah it could, and most likely is the same type of thing. But I really highly doubt this one is because of the New York one just given the distance.

Found it.

MADISON HEIGHTS -- Police this afternoon have closed the intersection of 13 Mile Road and Stephenson Highway because of a blown manhole cover.

An electrical problem is the likely culprit for the popped cover, Madison Heights Police said.

The problem has caused traffic lights at the intersection and 14 Mile Road and Stephenson to malfunction, police said.

Officers about 1:15 p.m. were waiting for DTE Energy crew to arrive and make repairs, police said.

Electrical problem?

Thanks

If that's accurate, then it doesn't seem like such a big deal now.

Whoever wrote that article that I posted did a really bad job with indicating explosives and multiple man hole covers being blown into the air.

If it's just an electrical problem, I apologize for posting this and mods can delete it. I was a victim of bad journalism.

Its prob not as rare as ppl may think.

A crew we used to work with were flushing water from a closed part of the network for a zero pressure test (checking boundry valves are tight) and the water seeped into an electrical box that should of been water tight (they also should of tried to flush the water another direction - different story) any who that box blew and sent the cover 15 foot in the air, no one was hurt - but its easy to do.
