Nomadic gypsies

Topic started on 23-7-2007 @ 08:14 AM by pai mei

I found this on youtube about nomadic gypsies in Romania:
www.youtube.com...
Nice way of life, even if I am sure it's not as easy as it seems If there is no electricity or running water I have big problems. I think we are in a technology trap compared to them

It is my understanding that non-gypsies are starting to follow this lifestyle too. Just google "nomad" and "living off the grid" and see what you get.

Aren't they pikeys? I live in something of a pikey hotspot, woe betide you if you have the misfortune to crash into one - no insurance, probably no licence, and their dozens of relatives will swear that the "driver" was never there. They also seem to ply a fairly lucrative trade stealing building materials and furniture from gardens (I belive they're also partial to trampolines)..... oh, and don't leave your dog outside.

Nomads on the other hand are ace, I went and stayed with some in Iran. Very, very tough and hardy people, they have to be. Really hospitable and friendly too!

For the information of those not from the UK (I'm not but I looked it up), pikey is UK slang for a nomadic Irishman or someone who lives on the cheap.

Just to let you know, I'm not using the term pikey as specifically "Irish traveller". In my area it's used as a general term for travellers and gypsies regardless of nationality.

I've often heard travellers referred to as "Do what you likey's", mainly due to their attitude of being above the law. This is sadly fairly common, they live in tight knit communities and the Police simply will not act against them in cases of theft. The only time I've seen the Police do anything was a year or so ago when two rival "families" had a nasty fight, some of whom got shot and stabbed! So, I guess the only time I've seen the Police do anything useful is when attempting to stop them killing each other!

Anyway...... none of that's relavent to the topic as such. I refuse to recognise "travellers" (like the ones in England) as nomads in the traditional sense. Not like the nomads of asia who's lives haven't really changed much for thousands of years.

Nahh not Pikeys

I was in London a few weeks back and there was a new white merc parked (ilegally) off Oxford street and every now and then some young girls would arrive, quickly give the driver something then run off.

Driver was typical Romanian, big 70's moustache 70's leather coat brylcreemed hair and looked like he hadnt washed in 10 years, might have been Turkish I spose
