Has Bruce Willis forgotten how to play McLain?

Saw Die Hard 4.0 last night, great movie I loved it. But in some bits it seemed like old Brucee was trying too hard to grunt and make weird noises when he got hurt and trying to be too funny at times. maybe he found it a little difficult to get back into character but his Helicopter destroying methods I good enough to rival Sly Stallone in First Blood.
