S.D. Holds First Execution in Decades

news.aol.com

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A 25-year-old man was executed by lethal injection Wednesday for the torture and slaying of a teenager who was forced to drink hydrochloric acid in a robbery. It was the state's first execution in 60 years.

Elijah Page gave up his appeals and asked to die for the 2000 murder of Chester Allan Poage, 19, who was also stabbed, kicked and bashed with large rocks in a torture session at a gulch in the Black Hills that lasted two to three hours.

Is this the beginning of a new trend in criminal procedures and justice of this country? Are you for or aginst Death Penalty? What impact will this have on the society?

I support the death penalty in extreme situations where the guilt of the accused is certain. When the crime is as serious as murder, serious punishments have to be applied. I just worry for those who might be convicted but are innocent. I haven't followed this case, so I don't know if it fits the above criteria. I suspect that since S.D. hasn't executed someone in 60 years that they aren't prone to just execute anyone they feel like (coughtexascough) so I think that in this case it was probably justified, but like I said, I haven't followed the case.

I don't see this as 'beginning a new trend', and I don't think this will 'have any impact on society', unless it turns out this guy was innocent, in which case there will be a massive uproar in S.D. and elsewhere.

I feel, Life Sentence is a much better option. Death Sentence is much more savage then murder itself. It is a reminder of the medivel times and should not be encouraged in modern societies.

I think this guy got off way too easy with lethal injection.

He should have been tortured for hours on end like his victim was before death was finally allowed to take him.

Would that be to say that his death by lethal injection was more savage than his victim being "stabbed, kicked and bashed with large rocks" to include being "forced to drink hydrochloric acid"?

That's some strange logic, if you ask me.

so, a lethal injection is more savage than kicking, stabbing, beating an innocent person over the head with rocks for three hours and the forcing him to drink acid? oh,that's right, i forgot, in this nation, with the liberals in charge of things, it's liberty and justice for all CRIMINALS...

I would prefer my tax money to go to schools and hospitals rather than crims getting 3 squares a day and pool tables and cable tv and silk sheets and trips to disney land and stuff.

Hang Um it's cheaper and they could do it before cup finals and concerts, to get the crowd warmed up!

12m8keall2c - No this is not a strange logic. Yes his death by lethal injection was much more savage than the crime itself for the simple reason that it is perpatrated by the civilized society. Man by nature, is cruel.Society cannot afford to be cruel. I was commenting on the 'nature' of such punishments and not on their method. In my opinion,if killing someone is a crime called 'murder',the same definiton holds good to the society too. 'Murder' is taking someone's life and the reason for the same is not important.

The intent of Death Penalty is to eliminate the chances of any harm to anyone. This can be effectively achieved by awarding life imprisonment. Thats my point.
