Interesting stuff!!

AUSTRALIAN physicists have discovered a method that could see atoms being teleported between Sydney and Perth and pave the way for possible Star Trek-like travel in the future.

This is a really big deal if it could render the capabilities described in the article.

It mentioned that they wouldn't be teleporting humans in the next four years but expected some pretty good results on moving the structures of atoms. (?)

"He said the method could be being used in laboratories in the next four years, but didn't expect he would ever see humans teleported." - article quote by scientist

Its certainly nothing even close to what Star-Trek conveyed. Lots of complications occur when you have to send a complex structure of atoms rather than just sending atoms. This would not work for teleportation. Humans cryogenically frozen instantly and thawed out on the other side?? I would say they are hoping to teleport atoms, quite a feat in itself, but it is not what is suggested in the first paragraph of this article.

edit to say - I still think this is fascinating science. Thanks for the post.

My Guess is the military will have a first piece of the cake, keep it for a few years then release it to the public.

Very promising technology, beats any fossil fuel vehicle but like it was mentioned before tranporting humans is another matter altoghether.

Besides Im sorry for the little pig or rat that is chosen for experimentation if this technology advances.

Think of the advantages that this could bring for online shopping around the world...

Order a TV or rather a holodeck emitter for your house and "wussh", it's delivered to your desk over your fiber line.

Maybe even food deliverys like pizza, tho you might need to microwave it from its frozen transport state

Wow, technology really is magic.

The problem with teleporting humans is, you have to kill them.

If you teleport them across atom by atom, you will undoubtedly show up with blood and other bodily fluids intertwined in areas they aren't supposed to be.
Not to mention your brain was just disconnected for a time.

Even if teleporting involves making a duplicate on the other end, the original has to be torn apart to ensure that all the atoms will arrive in the correct order.

The only way to teleport a human is if every single atom makes the jump at the exact same time, and I mean, perfectly.

Yea but.....

If you had a time machine and lets say you need to go to the shop 1 mile away and its going to take about 15 mins then if you jump 15mins into the future would you be already there??? and in a way, this would be like teleporting, kinda, sort of, ok maybe not, plus you need to invent the time machine first and if you did invent the time machine, you could always jump to a time when the teleporter was invented and go back to now and give it to "yourself" and then you would have prevented the need to time travel in the first place. Right???

This technology may lead to the possibility of being able to teleport vaccines or medicines through the cables to doctors so they can treat diseases. I am sure that simple proteins, viruses etc. could be teleportded but then you really would have to worry about bugs in the machine
