I found this .. interesting .. for many reasons, very intriguing..

A new NASA satellite has recorded the first detailed images from space of a mysterious type of cloud called "night-shining" or "noctilucent."

FOX

NASA at first played these clouds off as nothing, however they then decided to investigate, ordering a satellite to take several pictures (released anyways) of these "glowing clouds"..

Satellite-image composite over northern Europe and North America, taken June 11.

No one can say what it is, specialist of been pouring over data to find what is causing this never before seen phenomena. The clouds at first where thought to be a product of the Northern Lights however they are actual clouds, which is not what makes the North Lights possible.. however some theories can tie the two together by stating this has to do with our electro magnetic field..

The clouds form in the upper layers of the atmosphere, some 50 miles above Earths surface within the Mesosphere. One thing most scientist are currently agreeing on, is that this could very well be related to climate change, that something big is happening to our planet and we don't know what..

A weakening or failing Magnetic Field, could be to blame, evidence with animals disappearing, getting lost such as tropical fish in cold waters, whales off their migration paths and beaching themselves, bird migration interruptions and so forth.. now we have mysterious glowing clouds. Scientist do not know the implications of the clouds, how they form or why they formed. Sounds like we are a little confused on the topic in regards to our own climate and world.

Rockpuck, I have to say that that would be the most beautiful and yet the most mysterious and even perhaps a bit scary in regards to the pictures and your post.Perhaps we are in for something the likes of which Earth has not seen for thousands of years.

Awesome pics..

As a physicist, I have to say that I'm a bit bemused as to these clouds too..

Not really sure how you can explain it, since it's not reflection, and there aren't many mechanisms that emit light... It's possible that if the magnetic field of the earth IS weakening, then solar radiation is coming through and hitting clouds, knocking electrons off atoms and causing light to be emitted as the extra energy.. but, yeah, still, mystifying..

I would agree, I believe this is indeed because of a weakening electro magnetic field.. I believe that this could be made possible by solar dust, radiation get trapped within the ice crystals that are freezing some 50 miles above the planet.. they then reflect the suns light and most likely not emitting their own.. another possibility is that they are gather dust and radiation that the electro magnetic field causes to light up, much like the Northern Lights solar dust and radiation bouncing off the shield, the clouds are stuck in the layer of the atmosphere with the radiation and dust causing the same reaction.

More information here:

Mysterious clouds spray sky with light.

I wonder why, as they were discovered by the OGO-6 satellite in 1972, it has taken NASA so long to get detailed pictures of them.

I think it's interesting that the article mentions that this could be an "early" warning sign. Apparently, pictures will be taken of two complete cloud seasons over both poles so it appears as if scientists do not expect to discover tangible results for a while yet. If it is a warning sign, I just hope it is early enough and "intriguing" enough for scientists and world leaders to take heed and formulate strategies that will benefit the planet.

For those with an interest there is an expanded gallery of noctilucent formations at the AIM site at Hampton here.

Cheers,

If thats the same thing i saw then these clouds also occur alot lower than 50 miles. My electric cloud was next to a mountain which i think is about 400 and something metres high and the cloud was sitting about 3/4 of the way up.
