What are the requirements one must reach to become knighted? Do you have to be an English citizen? What about Scotland, Ireland and Wales? Do you have to be a certain age? Also, can someone point me in the right direction of people in modern society (post-19th century) that have become knighted? Is that the correct term or would it be 'obtained knighthood'? And what about becoming a Lady, would it be called 'obtaining Ladyship or Lady hood or something'?

I know, probably some really random questions, but me and a friend were curious.
