Back on topic......from what I have been further finding and reading, it seems that China, silently, has been seeking used aircraft carriers.....France is the lasted prospect (DeGaulle) (sp). In such, they are not specifically going to use these aircraft carriers bought, but will use them to learn from and then incorporate or improve on the current tech gathered and learned to build on their future plans for a aircraft carrier of two, or three....

Off topic: I love SuperPower. It is the best turn-based strategy game ever made. I played it just the other night. In one of my games from about a year ago, I had the U.S. with 1.5 billion people, millions in the armed forces, and lauched an invasion on China, Russia and Europe after about 80 weeks of turns, and took over the world in 3 weeks.

I heard that the game was horrible because you couldn't influence other events, everything was fixed outside your nation, no matter what you did there was always a major uprising in Mexico (or whatever i dont remember specifics)

I'm going to start a thread on this in belowtopsecret so that this doesn't go way off track....might be a good idea and allow for more qestions and discussions on this game.

the official speaks man (can't remember his name, sorry about that) said "China do not have the plan to have carrier in recent years. we already have 3 carriers for entertainment in DaLian, ShenZhen and ____(forgot)."
THENEO, i am sure if u watch it more carefully u'll find more and more products u use in daily life are made in (C), including Neo's KongFu was learned from China. what say u? yes we are catching up and rise in the east once again but the goal is not for war.
yes we copy from the advance aspect but that is the rule of civilization's progress don't u admit it?

In mid-May 2002, the South China Morning Post and some other Hong Kong papers published a series of reports regarding the Varyag aircraft carrier that had just arrived in China. The reports can be compressed into the following:

The aircraft carrier, built by Nikolayev Shipyard in Ukraine, owned by a Hong Kong firm and initially intended to be used as a floating casino and hotel, came in May 2002 to Dalian Shipyard, one of the largest and most advanced in China, after being towed for 110 days by tugboats halfway around the world. The Varyag was bought for $20 million in 1998.

The ship is surrounded in Dalian with heavy security, which bars civilian access; police officers flank the shipyard entrance. This has fueled speculation that the Varyag is being used by the Chinese military in an attempt to build its first operational aircraft carrier.

Varyag no longer has the nuclear reactors that were installed by the Ukrainian state-run Generating Systems of Crimea. Presently 70 percent complete, Varyag weighs only 33,600 tons. Construction on this Kuznetzov-class carrier was started in 1985, but work ceased in 1992 after the Soviet Union's collapse and the ship's transfer to the Ukrainian government, which could not find the exorbitant $200 million to finish the construction. (end of messages)

After getting this information, the author came to the conclusion that (a) the probability of Varyag becoming PLAN's (PLA Navy's) first aircraft carrier could be estimated as about 70 percent, and (b) this project could be completed by 2006.

Negotiations between China and Ukraine regarding the Varyag purchase started in 1995.

So it looks like China is going to have a carrier soon. But it will not be their own. It will be a Russian carrier that was just finished by them.

Chinese investors see the Varyag as a giant pleasure craft. To some military analysts, it's an aircraft carrier which would weight 67,000-tonnes when complete. For many observers, it's a rusted heap of junk.

The mystery of the hapless Varyag begins here with the stream of conflicts.

Chinese officials examined the Varyag in 1992, but failed to agree with Ukraine on a price for use as an aircraft carrier.
A satellite image taken by the U.S. in 1995 showed that the ship's ammunition elevator was open to the elements, which may have further damaged the interior.
The Varyag was sold for US$20 million. That price is about three times the normal scrap price for similar large ships (1).
Portuguese officials in Macau refused permission for Chong Lot to anchor the huge ship off the enclave in 1998.
Macau was governed by Portugal for 442 years before it was returned to China in December 1999.
Macau's coastal waters are much too shallow for a carrier to be anchored.
Chong Lot's offices in Macau does not exist. Chong Lot is a subsidary of another firm based out of Hong Kong called Chinluck (Holding) Co. Ltd. Directors of Chinluck, had ties to Chinese navy (2).
Chinluck (Holding) Co. Ltd. denied any People's Liberation Army involvement in the sale of the Varyag.
For several years, the Chinese navy has been attempting to obtain aircraft carrier technology, anxious to expand its naval power (3). China already has obtained at least three other carriers for study. They are the Melbourne, Kiev and her sister ship Minsk (4).
Chinese military have used the flight deck of Melbourne as a training ground (5). Kiev and Minsk have been turned into floating amusement parks and China preserved their names. Surprisingly, the Varyag (ex-Riga) was renamed to the Chinluck.
The Varyag was designed to carry the naval variant of the Sukhoi Su-27, a fighter the Chinese now produce under license.
Chinluck (Holding) Co. Ltd. accused Turkey of causing more than US$100 million in direct losses to their company by not giving passage permission for the Varyag. Turkey had insisted the Varyag would pose too a great danger to Istanbul but gave the final go-ahead on November 2001.
China offered to send tourists to countries including Turkey (31,995 Chinese arrived in Turkey in 2002), Greece and Singapore who have allowed the passage of the Varyag. On the other hand China offered to send tourists to Egypt who doesn't let Varyag pass through the Suez Canal.
Chinluck (Holding) Co. Ltd. does not have anything for public, moreover Chinluck does not have a web site.
Macau dealt out three new gaming licenses on February 08, 2002. 21 companies, among them many of the world's top gaming firms, submitted bids for the licenses last November. Chinluck was not among bidders.
The purchase and towing of the Varyag has cost about US$30 million, probably making it too expensive for use as an entertainment centre.
A recent look through the Hong Kong Yellow Pages shows that a new firm is added to Hotel & Motel Management pages with the name of Chinluck International Hotel Mgt Ltd. (removed)
The Varyag is now moored under high security in a Chinese naval base Dalian after a towage lasted 627 days.

China is discussing the purchase of a small fleet of helicopter carriers to enhance its amphib force. European bidders are in talks to start building them by the end of this decade.

Just ran across this very interesting article, yesterday:
The great Chinese aircraft carrier mystery

Military-minded netizens are abuzz with talk about the allegedly imminent appearance of a Chinese aircraft carrier. Actually, not just one, but three. One California-based news commentator, FreeRepublic.com ('pro-God, pro-life, pro-Bill of Rights, pro-gun... and pro-America'), warns that China, with the idea of seizing Taiwan in mind, is about to spring a 'technical surprise' on the world.

The latest carrier rumours have caught the attention of America's full, frenetic political spectrum: A detailed account also appeared on a website far to the left of any pro-gun posse - the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), an arms-control advocacy group.

The FAS report quotes an 'article published in China' that claimed that one of the shipyards was expected to complete the first 48,000-ton carrier, currently named 'Project 9935', this year. All three ships, claimed the FAS item, 'could be operational with battle groups by 2008-2010'.

If this is so, here's the million dollar question:
Being that you can't seemingly hide the construction of one large carrier, let alone three, and with both Taiwan and Japan having recon abilites and the US having SAT abilites, how are the Chinese maintaining this as secret and how are "we" not aware of their construction?

Great find

Does this signal the beggining of the second cold war?

Nah, I don't necessarily think so. I DO think that what all this indicates is a vastly different change in Chinese military and foreign policy, in regards to " world perception and projection".

China, in her own right, is a 'superpower'. What she has been lacking for quite sometime is a deep-water surface capability and projection. Seemingly, China is seeking to correct this.

Its very intresting what is posted here. How could they hide the building of the ships that big.

My question is, Do they really need them? France and china were doing naval ops, like two months ago. They could use the ones france has.

Yah, we do copy each other, but one thing that made russia a superpower they copied us, NUKES
And one thing what made US super power that copied from Russia was space carying rockets, satelites and other stuff. Or everyone knows paralel aircraft tail rudders that were copied from Mig-25 to F-15 by US scientist when Viktor Belenko landed with Mig-25 in japan. I think there are many things that were stolen from ech other of them. Today most significat technology stolen from Russian labs are Ion-engines, resp. plasma powered engines. One of the future satelites powered by such a engine was already released, but I don't know his name now. Ion-engines are able to maintain a high velocity speed 3-4 times higher than ordinary rocket engine and be much more efficiet at the same time.

As for Chineese Aircraft Carrier - I think the China is strong enough without Carrier. Having a Carrier is a omen of possible agresy to another distant country -> this is not nessesery -> chineese military industrial companys with their technology are oriented on defending china of probable future agressor.
