That is very interesting. I'm surprised no one had posted in this thread yet.

So NASA is confused as to what's going on? Could some massive external object be changing Jupiter's rotation? All I see is the equator being ripped apart and changed around.

Possibly because they read this bit in the article quoted by the OP:


These global upheavals have been seen before, but not with Hubble's sharp resolution. Astronomers using ground-based telescopes first spied drastic atmospheric transformation in the 1980s. Another major disturbance was seen in the early 1990s.


As to why NASA is so confused: I don't think it's just NASA, but the dozens of leading Jovian astronomers, or whatever they're called, who must be eagerly studying the original pix at the moment. Fact is, we don't know anything about what goes on insided Jupiter's atmosphere. Maybe there's a great big blender whirriing away down there under all those clouds. Maybe Jupiter is a souffle.
