On June 8, 1967, during the Six Day War, Israeli forces attacked the USS Liberty, a U.S. Navy intelligence-gathering ship off the coast of Gaza, killing 35 men and wounding 171. Israeli apologized and called the attack an accident. The U.S. government accepted the apology and did not openly challenge the explanation For almost three decades the crewmen of the Liberty have waged a campaign to have the attack investigated. Indeed, they claim that not only was the attack was intentional, but also that Johnson recalled the Sixth Fleet rescue flights to avoid a clash between the U.S. and Israel.

The Origins of the six day war are complex but what is often overlooked is that Israel started the six day war.Neutral imformation is often hard to find but the facts remain.

Israel was going into a battle against the Egyptians, the Jordinians, and the Syrians. Because of this, Israel decided to fight in Arab territory rather than have the battles in Israeli territory. On June 5th the Israeli Air Force made the First Strike on Egypt. That strike caught 309 of the 340 combat aircrafts belonging to Egypt. Then, Israel moved in their ground forces to complete the attack, leaving heavy Egyptian casualties, but very minimal causualties for Israel. Israel's first strike in the war was amazingly succesfull

This is from an Israeli educational source so you can understand the spin.Yes it is true Israel started the six day war by attacking Egypt.

It sounds remarkably similiar to another surprise attack on December 7th, 1941.

The Americans obviously got too close to what the Israelis didn't want them to see. And because America is in Israel's pocket (not the other way around as some may have u believe) nothing was done about it.

I don't doubt Israel attacked the Liberty on purpose. There's a great show about this on the History Channel you all should watch about this. (if you get the History Channel). Hard to dispute the accounts of the survivors. I think the Liberty at one point requested a destroyer escort prior to the attack which was declined.

There's a very great deal available on this and one needs to read quite intensively to get the full extent of the "cover up" and the subtle shifts in official posture since then.
One reasonable theory is that the Liberty was monitoring all communications -a "spy" ship of some sort -and that is why the Israelis attacked - either to keep the US in the dark (it's now a commonplace that no one even tries to deny that Israel began the war, as JB says) as to who was responsible, or to prevent leakages from US information gathering.

Incidentally, for readers wanting an introduction to the topic -GoOFF has quite a good piece tied in to the release of the updated -from 1980 -"Attack on the Liberty".
Dense on facts and figures (try to ignore the tone):

my take was the Liberty was carrying NSA equipment to monitor what was going on during that war - they mainly wanted to know if Soviets were flying for the Arab states. Israel, and I am a little vague here, launched another offensive/took land and or something of that nature. Not wanting to the Americans to know they attacked the ship with fighter jets then gun boats. Then came back to help them with helicopters, perhaps after the deed was done only. The witnesses swear the US flag was visible, Israelis thought it was a Egyptian troller that looked nothing like the Liberty.

Though it doesn't appear to be showing on the History Channel anytime soon - I have just searched their showtimes as I would like to see it again since were discussing it - look for a show called ' History Undercover: Cover Up: Attack on the USS Liberty'

I arrived at the question of 'how did Israel know' the US had a ship with secret spy equipment on it? No question really in my mind that they attacked that ship on purpose. I sort of think the US covertly gave Israel the green light on it's offensive, but oh - you've gotta take care of spy ship that's monitoring the situation - so we don't 'officially' know what you're doing.

what class was the ship?

It's all out there in masive detail on the Net, F-16: I'm not sure "class" is the right word; but the bare facts are: that she was a Belmont class technical research ship (7,500 tons approx.), built in 1945 as the civilian cargo ship Simmons Victory (i.e. a WWII "victory" ship").
She was acquired by the USN in 1963 for conversion and renamed Liberty and classified AG-168.
She was then re-classified as AGTR-5 in April 1964 and commissioned in 1964.

After State Department officials and historians assembled in Washington, D.C., last week to discuss the 1967 war in the Middle East, I am compelled to speak out about one of U.S. history's most shocking cover-ups.

On June 8, 1967, Israel attacked our proud naval ship -- the USS Liberty -- killing 34 American servicemen and wounding 172. Those men were then betrayed and left to die by our own government.

U.S. military rescue aircraft were recalled, not once, but twice, through direct intervention by the Johnson administration. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara's cancellation of the Navy's attempt to rescue the Liberty, which I personally confirmed from the commanders of the aircraft carriers America and Saratoga, was the most disgraceful act I witnessed in my entire military career.

To add insult to injury, Congress, to this day, has failed to hold formal hearings on Israel's attack on this American ship. No official investigation of Israel's attack has ever permitted the testimony of the surviving crew members.

A 1967 investigation by the Navy, upon which all other reports are based, has now been fully discredited as a cover-up by its senior attorney. Capt. Ward Boston, in a sworn affidavit, recently revealed that the court was ordered by the White House to cover up the incident and find that Israel's attack was "a case of mistaken identity."

Some distinguished colleagues and I formed an independent commission to investigate the attack on the USS Liberty. After an exhaustive review of previous reports, naval and other military records, including eyewitness testimony from survivors, we recently presented our findings on Capitol Hill. They include:

Israel deliberately attacked the Liberty as she was monitoring traffic and Israel knew this. The American flag was flying while she was under attack. The real motive is not certain however, it is believed the Israeli's thought the Liberty was monitoring the wasting of Egyptian captured troops and had to end that paper trail. I don't really buy into that. It took over a decade for the US to receive compensation for that and Lyndon stabbed the Americans in the back on that one.

Do not reply that I am inciting anti-semmitism with my post as I am stating the facts. If no one was allowed to state their opinion or facts Israel and any nation on earth would not be liable for their actions.

I sincerely hope something is done about this, but I suspect it never will. God Bless all those who were senselessly murdered by the "state" of Israel.

man, day by day i am getting so tired of Israel, ... didn't know they stab us in the back back then in the 1960s... and we still don't do anything about Israel... this is sad...

Exclusive: Liberty attack tapes revealed

At 1:58 pm on June 8, 1967, Capt. Yiftach Spector lined up his Mirage IIICJ fighter jet above the USS Liberty and raked it from bow to stern with his armored-piercing bullets from his 30 mm guns.

Even now, 37 years later, the attack by the Air Force on the American spy ship on the fourth day of the Six Days' War fuels the fire of intrigue, conspiracy and cover-up theories. Nevertheless, what follows is powerful evidence that the attack was a tragic mistake.

The Israel Air Force archives have audiotapes of the radio transmissions made prior, during and after the attack. They have never been made public. The Jerusalem Post was allowed to listen to these tapes on an exclusive basis together with other Air Force historians. Here, for the first time, the actual transcripts of the radio transmissions between the pilot and ground station appear in the press.
