There is a serious problem with the way the australian government is handling this supposed "epidemic", if it does in fact exist. This is the type of thing that cannot be tolerated anymore. You don't treat people - any people - needing assistance with a military/police intervention.

People must stand up and say something. I wrote a letter to Mr. Howard and the United Nations. I suggest others do the same if they find this treatment intolerable.

If it does exist?

Well, it does exist. These remote communities are often quite dysfunctional.
There is NO employment of any worth. There is no actual reason to live in a camp in the middle nowhere, unless you are going to "live off the land", which these people are not doing.

So, you can say that the current plan is simplistic and heavy handed, but the current situation *sucks* and desperately needs fixing, someway somehow.

Mate, you need to look at the fact before you start rambling on.

There has been two other threads on this same topic, so why don't you read all the responses.

I'm not going to start talking about it again.

what i really want to know is what's up Australia's sleeve. they've been sitting quietly in the far east corner of Earth for quite some time now though they have a strong economy and world class cities with the money to back them up. they've got to be up to something those kangaroo riding Aussies!

I did not find anything odd at either link. What is this all about?

Aboriginals are still Australian citizens. The media over here is reporting that all Aboriginal children up to the age of 16 will undergo medical checks to see if they have been sexually abused. How would John Howard feel if the racial stereotyping was removed and HIS 16 year old daughter had to be examined against his and her will to see if she has been abused? Classic double standards, they're going to need to really think this through. Racism as I recall it is when a group is targeted/seperated from another group because of race. This is gonna get ugly.....Oh by the way, aren't white people ever convicted of child abuse? You're damn right they are.

By the way I can see Mt Warning here, (Wollumbin in Aboriginal).

this is really giving me the "faeces" !

I first and formost am not a John Howard supporter in the slightest thou I must give credit where credit is due, and in this situation I beleive that he is the only prime-minister with the "balls" to do something about it.

And no, do not even try to blame this on the forthcoming election for this action was intigated as soon as the results of a report into the incidents of child abuse in aboriginal communities was released.

The Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister says the findings of a report into child sex abuse in Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory are an absolute disgrace.

The grim report, released in Darwin today, outlines 97 recommendations and points to alcohol and a lack of education as the biggest contributors to child sex abuse.

The report found Indigenous children are acting out what they have seen in pornographic material and it recommends the tightening of pornography legislation.

Mal Brough says child protection is a state and territory responsibility despite the Commonwealth already injecting $130 million into the problem.

"This is a national disgrace, it's a disaster and it is something that should never happen in this country," he said.

"We should all find it absolutely abhorrent and should be doing everything in our power to fix it."

Mr Brough has also refused to back down from his comments that paedophile rings are operating in Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory.

The report outlines allegations of sex trades and juvenile prostitution but does not mention paedophile rings.

Mal Brough disagrees and says you just have to look at the evidence.

"In the last two months, 13 out of [an] approximate adult population of 90 have been charged with child sex offences against children as young as three with the main offence being penetration of a girl under 13," he said.

The Minister for Central Australia says it is time for everyone to stop making excuses and tackle child sex abuse in Indigenous communities.

"[It is a] big wake-up call, the responsibility as I say is with us all, as of this day forward we shouldn't go around making excuses."

So you do gooders here, tell me what the hell is wrong with what the government is trying to do?

For years, decades, aboriginals, their representatives, and others have protested, complained, cried out for an apology from the government over their "stolen generation" -

from wikipedia the definition of the stolen generation -
"Stolen Generation is the term commonly used to mean the Australian Aboriginal children who were removed from their families by Australian government agencies and church missions between approximately 1900 and 1972. Originally considered child welfare, the practice is today perceived by many as a gross human rights violation, having wrought extensive family and cultural damage.

when the intention was to remove children from desolate and impoverished aboriginal communities and to give them a better chance of life in the cities and suburbs.

And now, when the situation is as bad as it is, when children "SHOULD" be removed from many of these communities for their own safety and protection, the do gooders are out there again saying, No, this has to stop, your breaking apart families and communities, well BOO HOO HOO!

What would be better, to break apart a family and community so the children have a chance at growing up as children? so they can play with kids and learn and have an education? so they can finally sleep at night not having to worry about wether Uncle Bob had too much beer and is going to try and sexually abuse me again tonight?

I am not for removing kids from families at all, but if proven, if there is evidence and witnessess to sexually assault on minors anywhere, then by god, we gotta get those kids out of there. NO IFS OR BUTS ABOUT IT !

It is not racists in the slightest - we do the same thing with white Australians if proven that somebody has been sexually abusing their kids then the kids are removed. Its common sense!

So to those who are still complaining about what is happening out there, get in your car and drive out to some of these communities where you will see for yourself the damage that alcohol and pornography has been doing to these people.

Then drive to a community that has been designnated a "dry" area with no alcohol permitted at all and see what a difference there is in the communities.

People should stop looking for the smallest excuses for whats going on and recognise a positive action when it is implemented and support it !
