CIA tried to get mafia to kill Castro: documents

news.yahoo.com

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The CIA worked with two of the country's most-wanted criminals in a botched attempt to assassinate Cuban President Fidel Castro in a "gangster-type action" in the early 1960s, according to documents released by the CIA on Tuesday.

The CIA declassified hundreds of pages of long-secret records that detail some of the agency's worst illegal abuses during about 25 years of overseas assassination attempts, domestic spying and kidnapping.

It is interesting that they would release documents about an assasination of a foreign leader who is both alive and still in power. To get the mafia to kill Castro shows perhaps how desperate they were to rid themselves of the thorn in thier side sitting off the coast. Aparently the plan was to poison Castro and got as far as delivering the lethal medication to a few people in Cuba, but one got cold feet and the other may have made a few attempts that clearly did not succeed.

One has to wonder about the persistant rumors about the CIA and the mafia killing JFK?

I suppose its no big secret to the Cubans that the U.S. attempted such a thing and probably did more then once so releasing the documents now and admitting it while he is still alive is probably no real surprising news to Castro and family. I do wonder how else they might have tried .... did they have Castro's cooks try to place poison in his food maybe? Or a bartender drop some in a drink maybe? I bet the CIA never expected him to live as long as he has, I guess after so long they just decided he was no longer a threat and just left him alone to die of old age.

With the evidence of how the JFK Secret Service men who were to march along side of his Presidential car during the parade where told to back-off (giving a more clearer shot for the shooter prior to JFK's approach to the Grassy Knoll) surely makes that one of the most suspicious pieces of evidence that something wasn't right. Seems that the only ones able to give that order had to have been the CIA, IMO. Wonder if any of those type of CIA documents will ever be disclosed anytime soon. I would think that if it were the Mafia at the time "only" responsible then orders like that wouldn't have happened and it would of been more of a Mafia style "hit". Possibly with lots of machine gun fire all over the car as the Mafia was always famous for doing back in the earlier days like in "the Untouchables". Again, IMO.

Bzzzzzzz

The mafia had a lot at risk in Cuba at the time. It was a brief hop off the coast of the USA and out of bounds of US Laws, Gambling and other illegal activities that Castro shut down put them at a great loss. This idea has been around a long time. I doubt that the CIA had to really push them too much. Im sure they would have tried with or without CIA nudging.

This story along with all the rest of the report are well known. From the mob connection to '___' stuff. Nothing new here, the real good stuff up on the 7th floor we will never see. Guess most of the Vietnam era stuff is still hush hush..This report is CIAs way of keeping the real good stuff locked up. that is all.

the mafia was out for castro anyway they had just opened up casinos and clubs in havana when castro came to power and the people that were with him were rebelling against the rich controllers of cube so havana was a place that got hit hard and since it messed with the mafias busines a hit was put out on him.....thats why the cia tried to use the mafia they both wanted him dead and i dont think this is the first time the cia used the mafia remember when lee harvey oswald got killed before he could go to court

Did the U.S. tried in many occassions to kill castro? of course they tried...

However apparently some peope think castro and his revolution rid the island of corruption and that is not true. Yes there was corruption in Cuba before castro took power, but still back then most Cubans were better off than after castro took power...

BTW corruption has become much worse since fidel took power of the island.

BTW, you should listen to this video and perhaps realize why the U.S. back then wanted to get rid of castro...

The following is an interview of Robert McNamara, who was Secretary of Defense during the Cuban missile crises, who tells what castro told him during a meeting they both had, very interesting video.

www.youtube.com...

BTW....there are many people who actually think that castro, or even Chavez, have only accused the U.S. of "plotting to kill him" which they still claim almost every week... But what i have noticed is that many people have no idea that catro and Chavez have accused presidents of other Latin American countries "of trying to kill them or knowingly harboring terrorists to kill them"...

The following is a video of the 10th. Ibero-American Summit which took place in Panama in 2000, where Francisco Guillermo Flores Pérez, who was President of Salvador from 1999-2000 responds to the accusations of castro, and mentions that even Chavez has made such accusations, and responds to the Cuban dictator that castro was directly responsible for training guerrillas to overthrow a "democratically elected government in Salvador and is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Savadorian citizens...

The video is in Spanish, i will try to find it translated in English. I often times wonder why the people who always claim about "the U.S. is still trying to kill castro and assassinate Chavez" don't speak of these facts... castro and Chavez have accused presidents of other Latin American countries of trying to assassinate them and harboring terrorists... They use the same tactic with the U.S. to this day....
