Scientist int he US have found a way to improve upon ethanol and make a fuel from plant sugar that contains 40% more energy. In addition, the process is much less energy intensive that the traditional means of making ethanol.

This is a good step but the key will be the ability to use regular plants for the process like the much touted switch grass rather than corn etc that has other uses.

PARIS (AFP) - Chemists in the United States say they have broken new ground in biofuels, transforming plant sugar into a liquid fuel that packs 40-percent more energy than ethanol and appears to have fewer of its drawbacks.
