The Pakistan military has launched a major operation against suspected al-Qaeda militants in the country's tribal region that borders Afghanistan.

A military spokesman said helicopter gunships were supporting ground troops.
The military crackdown started in the early hours of Thursday morning following intelligence reports that some suspected foreign militants were hiding in the mountains near Waziristan's main town of Wana.

The Pakistan Army has launched attacks against terrorist targets before but results seem to have been poor, although one operation did end with the death of a militant later identified as the leader of an extremist group involved in terrorism aimed at China. There is no report as to the scale of this operation but it does seem to be aimed at the heartland of Islamic militancy in the North of the country.
It is suspected that many high ranking Al-Qaeda and Taleban members are hiding in this region.
