US Parents Risk Jail When Their Teens Drink at Parties

rawstory.com

A Virginia couple who provided beer at their home for their 16-year-old's birthday party to stop him from drinking behind their backs, ran afoul of a law banning alcohol for under 21s, and were sent to jail for two years earlier this month.

Many of the 50 US states allow for fines of up to 1,000 dollars for each underage guest if alcoholic beverages are served at your house in their presence -- whether they have imbibed or not.

If you serve liquor to minors, you're breaking the law, those parents should have known better.

It's the second paragraph that I have a problem with.

An adult has a party at their house, family re-union, super bowl party, whatever, and they are serving alcohol, a guest brings their children to the party, and now the host may be fined up to $1,000 per child even when the kids aren't drinking just because alcohol is being served in the presence of minors?

That is not right!

Or am I misinterpreting this?
