Recording "beyond the grave"

I don't know the term for this, but how do you record the voices that are apparently picked up in certain audio recordings?

I heard somewhere that it is better with a digital recorder. Is this true?

Finally... if I record a conversation with an otherwise empty room (intentionally, not because I'm mad!), and I DO pick something up - should be freaked out or what?!

There is a very good website...cant remember the name...just google EVP or White Noise (maybe whitenoise) it will pop up.

My suggestion is to keep all types of recording devices on hand, you never know which you may pick something up with. I personally think sometimes it comes to you, in which case, be prepared!
