2012: Repeat Of The 1859 Solar ‘Super Storm’ Catastrophe?

I didn’t know where to put this, in the science forum or the esoteric prophesies/predictions section. But here it is…

This isn’t some dude or a shady end-of-the-world clan or organization interpreting Mayan calendars etc. The 2012 event is scientifically based and a repeat of the 1859 ‘super storm’ catastrophe. Whether it’s a doomsday scenario or not, only time will tell! But here’s what the scientific forecast says...

Hard sci-fi doomsday fodder? Unfortunately not, according to solar physics experts at Purdue University and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The solar activity “we’re really worried about,” according to Lister, is a massive coronal ejection event. It’s a literal once-in-a-century solar super storm. In a coronal ejection event, the sun erupts massive qualities of super-heated plasma and material from its surface at speeds approaching 100 million kilometers per hour. According to ice-core analysis from Antarctica, the estimated total solar mass from the 1859 event was roughly equivalent to the surface land of North America spread out over the entire solar system. Biesecker added: “The coronal event is massive when compared to the size of the planet.”

The report states: “The consequences of a future 1859-caliber super storm event – were it to occur near the peak of the next sunspot cycle – are quite extensive and involve a range of human and technology impacts not unlike a major Force 5 hurricane or tsunami. There will be dramatic increases in UV radiation, effecting life on the Earth’s surface”.

Yes. Very interesting stuff happening with this next solar cycle. It reminds me of Major Ed Dames (Dr. Doom), I like the man and he first got me interested in the coming possibilities. Am I prepared? I am a Parent... As for the rest only nature and God can decide. Oh and a very very deep cave until the rad's settle down.

Nice to read a scientific approach to this instead of the ol "we aaall gonna diiiie" prophecies.

Even though the info given isn't too optimistic, I'm very excited to see the outcome of this, especially because 2012 will give science a chance to see what really happens when, in what must be a unique situation, given all the conjunctions of our solarsystem with the galaxy center and now this.

2012 must be a true test of Earths natural defenses I would be disappointed if we didn't get our ass kicked a little bit...

Seriously, if a solar storm damages things we deserve it anyway...except that i'd suffer, harden the equipment already... 2 Billion a bomb but no electromagnetic protection? If it did happen...it would be just desserts and frankly i can live without logging in for a few months...last i checked software was on disk right... shouldn't take forever to learn a lesson..

Such a CME today might play havoc with communications etc for a few hours but that's about it.

Right, no one died directly from the energy that slammed into earth in 1859. There were some fires started when some electrical lines fell.

I'm not a Doomsayer type of person, however. If, in 2012, a rather large sun spot were to become perfectly aligned with the earth, and there was a VERY large out burst at the right moment, it is possible that the “flux density” of the charged particles that end up slamming into the earth could over power earths magnetic field. A lot of ionizing radiation could get through. A lot of life could end up with some level of radiation poisoning. You know, it’s estimated that the “Clump” of charged particles and radiation that hit earth in 1859 only took 18 minutes to reach earth. The faster charged particles are moving, the more energy they have. High energy charged Particles = “Danger Will Robinson.”

The probability level of this happening may be very low, but it is not an impossibility.

The probability level of a killer asteroid hitting earth in our live times is pretty low. But take a look at Mars and our Moon. Killer asteroids have hit our planet in the past.
