The UK government are attempting to pass new laws that will give the police the right to stop, search and detain people and property for up to 7 days under anti-terrorist legislation.

New Powers

The main difference to this legislation is that anyone can be searched and have their property detained regardless if they are suspected of terroris involvement or not.

The article states that individuals will have the right to legal representation, but searches and procedures will not be suspended while waiting for a solicitor to attend.

Further legislation is in the pipeline that will extend the amount of time that a terrorist suspect can be held without charge. Bear in mind that current UK legislation already allows detention for up to 28 days without charge, the longest period in the western world.
