Always in the back of my mind when I board a chopter or fixed wing aircraft that small aircraft are fragile things and the margin for error is often
very slim. These thoughts are quickly shelved as we get on with the business at hand. No doubt, Dr. Martinus Spoor, Dr. David Ashburn, both cardiac
surgeons, and transplant donation specialist Richard Chenault and Richard LaPensee , and pilots Dennis Hoyes and Bill Serra were focused on the task
at hand delivering the vital organ and mentaly preparing for the upcomming surgery.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these lifesavers who despite the risks still went out to try to save a life.
The patient lay on the operating table, prepped for transplant surgery. In the air over Lake Michigan, a twin-engine plane sped his way, carrying a
team of surgeons and technicians, along with a donor organ on ice. The plane never made it, crashing into the lake's choppy waters and killing all
six people aboard Monday.
Now the critically ill patient could become the accident's seventh fatality.
