FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Authorities resumed a search Tuesday for a nine-year-old girl who was missing from her rural home.
Julia A. Kuhn was last seen by her family about 2:45 p.m. Monday and was reported missing about four hours later, Allen County Sheriff Ken Fries said. Her family said she ran into a barn with her brothers to escape a storm, but did not return with them.
Julia is 4-foot-6, 90 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes, a scratch under her left eye and a small scar on her left cheek. She was last seen wearing black and pink shorts, a red shirt and tennis shoes.
Julia A. Kuhn was found in New Haven, about 16 miles away from her home in a rural area near Fort Wayne, said Allen County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Stone.
“Officers are still trying to determine how she got there and what happened while she was missing,” Stone said.
Allen County Sheriff's Department said the girl told officers that she hid in her mother's van with some clothes, makeup and a sports drink. Her mother, who didn't know she was in the van, then drove to work at St. Joseph Hospital, where the girl got out and walked to a library where she stayed for several hours.
Afterward, she walked to her aunt's house and slept on the porch, police said.
