The same top Bush administration neoconservatives who leap-frogged Washington's foreign policy establishment to topple Saddam Hussein nearly pulled off a similar coup in U.S.-China relations - creating the potential of a nuclear war over Taiwan, a top aide to former Secretary of State Colin Powell says.

ARE THESE PEOPLE CRAZY? Mainland China has made it abundantly clear that they consider Taiwan a renegade province, which, historically speaking it is. They have also made it abundantly clear that if Taiwan attempts session they will invade. And, given the United States long standing policy to defend the island from invasion, such an act would surely provoke a war, a war we could never win.

It is interesting to note that other former defense officials dispute this, but given the track record, their credibility is rather strained.

Ideologues in office scare the p out of me. Give me a cold blooded pragmatist any day; for all their faults, pragmatists aren't going to reshape the world according to any ideology.
