I've seen the images of what magnetic fields look like when generated (covering a nice radius from pole to pole), so how are they transformed/condensed/manipulated into a beam like form and sent from their source to a small, designated area?

According to physicists, you can shape the field, but you can't project it forward (like a laser beam). Here's a nice, brief, understandable (plain English) version of the answer:
