China announced today that it planned to kill thousands of wild animals to attempt to head off a new SARS epidemic. The main species of animals to be
targetted is the Civet Cats because they are suspected SARS carriers. However, Zhong Nanshan, director of the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory
Diseases, said species related to civets also will be killed, including raccoon dogs, ferret badgers, hog badgers and Eurasian badgers.
China seems to beleive the animals are the definite cause but, The World Health Organization is less definitive about civet-SARS links. One of WHO's
animal experts, Dr. Jeffrey Gilbert, states that while the weasel-like mammals have been "implicated" in the disease's possible transfer from
animals to humans, definitive proof has yet to be found.
Even though it is not clear who will carry out the slaughter or even how it will be conducted China stated that it would be completed by Saturday.
