If I heard correctly, Spirit will be analyzing sediments in the crater. I don't think I have heard anything about fossils, but I haven't paid too much attention to it due to my work schedule.

This is the first 3-D panorama of Spirit's Landing Site on Mars on Monday, Jan. 5, 2004 released by NASA (news - web sites) This sprawling look at the martian landscape surrounding the Mars rover is the first 3-D stereo image from the rover's navigation camera. A surface depression nicknamed 'Sleepy Hollow' can be seen to center left of the image. Scientists theorize that this topographic feature, measuring about 10 meters (30 feet) in diameter and located approximately 10 to 20 meters (30 to 60 feet) away from Spirit, is either an impact crater or a product of wind-erosion. The 3-D photo is a combination of the rover's right and left camera.(AP Photo/NASA)
