A failure in generalship
www.armedforcesjournal.com
The most tragic error a general can make is to assume without much reflection that wars of the future will look much like wars of the past.
It is unreasonable to expect that an officer who spends 25 years conforming to institutional expectations will emerge as an innovator in his late
forties.

There isnt much I can say due to Lt. Col. Paul Yingling being so spot on. Make sure you take the time to read the whole essay its well worth the read.
If the US wants to win the current conflicts a new generation of US military leaders will have to be breed and promoted on the basis of merit rather
then just being a yes man.
Parisian politics needs to be put aside and this issue needs to be tackled NOW there is far to much at stake to just ignore the problem.
Does the US really have to lose another set of wars in part due to the failure of US military leaders ?
Lets just hope that the trend is some how bucked because the War in Afghanistan is very winnable and the mess in Iraq could have been avoided.
I believe that business leaders and leaders of significant should read and heed what the author has to say.

A true military leader can and should learn from the past, however it is todays micro-managed politicaly correct "wars" that are the self imposed
failure. Putting aside ones feeling about the actual reasons, we need to see that todays leashed solider under overly resrictive rules of engagement
are really to blame.
If we cannot stomach war then roll over now and let the world take us over. It is not pretty it is not nice. Above all else the top brass need to
forget the book deals and policital aspirations and be the warriors they started out to be. You fight a war to win. Now get to it.
Sorry about the rant. Good post!

This guy has cut his own throat. Comparing todays generals with McClellan? OMG! Generalisations are permitted, even encouraged...but for Lt.
Colonel Yingling to specifically name names is not wise in an upwardly mobile career way...
He's right. But that's not going to help him any.
Within the next few years, he'll be out, one way or the other. He's pissed some very powerful people off.
Just reread his article...
He's so spot on it's scary. When an army consentrates all its resources to fighting the last war, it's doomed. It's not too late to right this,
but I am afraid that Lt. Colonel Yingling will not be in the Army to see it. If he's lucky, he'll get sent to Adak, if not he'll be RIF'd.
