Just ran across this in my reading today -

The Justice Department investigation that criticized FBI agents for
taking souvenirs from the World Trade Center site also found that Defense Secretary Donald
H. Rumsfeld and a high-ranking FBI official kept items from the Sept. 11 attack scenes.
The final investigatory report said the Justice Department inspector general confirmed
Rumsfeld "has a piece of the airplane that flew into the Pentagon." The Associated Press
obtained a copy of the report Friday.

More info on FBI agents and others taking souvenirs can be found here

Am I the only one that thinks this is just.. disgusting?

I mean, to me a souvenir reminds you of a happy holiday, or some important personal celebration.. not a mass murder..

Now that is weird, very weird. Why on earth would anyone want such a 'souvenir'? I must say that surprised me. 9/11 was a tragedy and a day of infamy, why anyone would want a piece of the plane and keep it is beyond me.

Thats not weird at all...

I, personally, would like a piece of one of the aircrafts from 9/11. As a reminder of what religion can make people do.

9/11 was a tragedy, and i think Rumsfeld would agree on this.

You would keep it as a reminder of how vulnerable the USA really was/is.

Nothing weird about this. Nothing to see here, move along now.

Or maybe as a reminder of how he and his people majorly F'ed up that day? Maybe.

Wow he has a part of the plane?! I can only think of one reason why would he want it - a trophy.

Yeah, but I have to think what part does he have and where is the part? Isn't that illegal to take evidence from a crime scene? I wonder if he has it over his fire place? That to me is just a little strange...

You mean like Religions that make people have Lap Dances and Cocaine and then go and kill themselves all in the name of a God? Somehow I don' think so.

I think everyone is overreacting here a little. Honestly, I don't think there is anything to this at all.

I garauntee there are hundreds, if not thousands, of members here at ATS, who if given the chance, would also have some sort of rememberance of 9/11.

It isn't a trophy or anything like that. It's just something to have to remember that terrible day. Nothing more.

So, if a cop picks up the bullet that went through his partners heart and keeps it as "something to remember that terrible day", it would be ok for this to happen? Nothing more than obstructing justice IMO.

It's apparantly a well known fact now that he has a piece of the 9/11 wreckage. If there was any sort of crime here, he's be charged. I don't understand how you people can say things like "he's sick" for having it. I think you're just looking for a reason to jump on the guy. I imagine it's probably sitting somewhere in plain sight so that he can glance at it and remember what happens when we are not steadfast with security.

Why WOULDN'T that be okay? What's wrong with that. If it isn't going to affect some sort of investigation or prohibit others from figuring out what happened, then what's the problem? Obviously him having a piece of the plane isn't delaying an investigation or holding anyone back. It's completely harmless.

I think people are just looking for another reason to bash the guy.

you do not keep pieces of a tragedy as a momento, as a trophey.
Hell why not just replay the video tapes daily>
anyone who thinks it cool to keep tropheys of 9/11 no matter who did it is sick in the head.

the man is pure evil incarnate
so yeah we will bash him and his aspartame passing mental illness

The difference is that on 9/11 when he would have taken the piece, he didn't know if it would delay an investigation or not. It is ILLEGAL to take something from a crime scene. Including a bullet. PERIOD.

So the FDNY, NYPD and PA workers that all have 'souveniers' of that day from their fallen brothers are all in on the conspiracy? This is going a little too far. How can you say it is a trophy? It is a reminder of prboably the greatest intel fault in US history and he was directly attached to it. If anything, it is too keep him grounded and remember why and what happened that day.

There is nothing ghoulish about it. IMainge how much other stuff is floating around

PS- Rumsfeld has a piece from the Pentagon crash, so that throws out the missle theroies doesn't it

Says whom? That may be your opinion, but that likely isn't the opinion of most people. "Trophies" as you call them don't always serve as a celebration of the fact. "Momento" is a better term in this case. It's an artifact that serves as a reminder of what happened on that terrible day.

First off, how could it be a peice of a plane if a plane didn't crash into the pentagon? (Just had to tease the conspiracy theorists out there, sorry).

Second, I don't see this a wrong or illegal. For the people who say he kept it as trophy and that he is sick or twisted for doing so, just what does that say to the people who took part of the Berlin Wall? Are they sick? Who even said he took it as a symbol of "triumph" or "victory"?

I would love to have a peice of the wreckage. It would act as a reminder of what happened that day. It's more of a memorial kinda thing, I would think, than a trophy of victory, as Jungle has suggested. Whats wrong with that?

Its a trophy, like in your avatar. Its like a criminal who takes something pointless yet symbolic from the scene of a crime like a trophy, or a hunter who kills his prey then hangs the carcass on the wall.

Illegal? Doesn't matter, these guys are above the law for the most part, this is nothing.

Just to bring my two cents to the thread:

He kept a piece of the plane. Can anyone honestly say that, if given the chance, they would not want a piece of any one of the planes from that morning?

::awaits the antagonist rebuttal::

If I had a chance to own a piece of the planes, I would like to very much. It should not be seen as a trophy --seems like a far-fetched attempt at further villifying Rummsfeld...there are better, more concrete reasons to villifying him already.

In my humble opinion, it should be looked at for what it is: A piece of history.

Oh well, my two cents.

If you do a little more reasearch you will find that it sits on his desk as a reminder to everyone who comes in there what happened that day. Maybe if we all stopped for a minute and stared at something like that we would realize that we have to come together as a nation that is divided. IN a time what you have terrorists endorsing bills that are presented in politics, there is a problem. How can people still think the administration is behind this when even Al-qeada endorses the democrats and their war against Bush. He is also well aware that if needed it will be taken. This is not a personal effect kept on his mantle at home.

No one answered my question about whether they would walk up to a rescue worker from NY and call them a ghoul or sick for thier momento they took from a fallen brother? (crickets)

Maybe Rumsfeld requires that piece of the plane to assist in his ritualistic urges at 3:15am in the morning, 3 Cialis's and his wife's shoe. Just a pet theory of mine. Discuss.
