I can't help but laugh on how fearful of a society we are. Looking at many of the posts, they have to do with running, hiding, stocking up on food, getting the guns ready, and every other type of knee jerk, typical human reaction.

If aliens made themselves known it sure wouldn't be to kill or harm anyone. Why? because if they are smart enough to make it here from many light years away, they could have extinguished everyone on the face of the planet, without ever making themselves known.

Let's see extremely intelligent aliens, make themselves known to lower level, emotional, irrational, low IQ humans that might freak out, over-react and kill many of them before they get their message out. NOT.

Look at us as a society, we farm animals, kill them for meat, we kill each other in the name of what, most of the time?

Humans lie, cheat, steal, kill and would sell their neighbors out just for their own existence, under the vail of a justified cause.

If I was an alien from another planet, I wouldn't set foot on this mad, chaotic world until the humans had wiped each other out or ascended to a level of emotional stability.

I'd hope they were close enough for me to get a good look at 'em and their hardware.

If I can get close enough to communicate effectively, I'd ask for permission to come aboard to explore the inside of their ship.

If communication was good - I'd ask to have a private, prolonged one-on-one tour and then a heart-to-heart conversation with ANY one or all of them.

I have tons of questions I'm desperate to hear the answer to...

Lets face it...there are a LOT of variables here...

1. Do they show up ID4 style, with big motherships poised over large cities and no public address?

2. Does just one ship show up over the Whitehouse?

3. Do a few smaller ships show up to major nations' capitals?

Assuming the worst...the rioters and the looters are really my first concern. They pose the most immediate threat to me and my loved ones. THAT's the reason for grabbing the guns and holing up... Hole up and watch the tv, and listen to the radio, to see if we can figure out what the gig is...(and surf the web of course)....

Anyone who says they'd do anything else (aside from joining the rioters and/or the looters) is kidding themselves....

After the danger of my fellow humans is passed...THEN I'll worry about just why the aliens are here...and whether or not we're being told the truth NOW.....

I really think it would depend on the approach and the reality of it. For this scenario I'm assuming a nuts & bolts approach as opposed to a trans-dimensional one. But it's one thing if alien ships show up over all major cities, like in more than one movie, and another if one shows up on the white house lawn. If the former: panic, no doubt. If the latter, I don't think so, because they would be following protocol. That doesn't justify the total collapse of society in an instant. Just because a UFO lands at the white houe doesn't mean we all have to protect our bedroom communities with guns. There might be some panic buying. I think everyone should be prepared for that for ANY reason. I mean, get six months worth of MREs and make sure you have a hot tub full of water-NOW, just in case. Shouldn't you do that anyway?

Awesome thread. The first thing I would do is grab a radio, my guns, ammo, batteries, bottled water, canned foods, a knife, and other extras and head for my basement which is more like a cellar surrounded by 4 walls of concrete next to a crawl space.

from there i would decide my next intentions which would probably be securing the house and the perimeter.

why you ask? well because in every alien movie or book i've ever read, they certainly would want to kill me so this would be my first move. sorry, that's just the way it is. i'm prepared like a boyscout or atleast i try to be.
