So I was thinking about the media climate of 2007 that we live with and the question came up. This is a hypothetical question if the following event were to be occurring today-right now-and without our knowledge. So:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the Watergate scandal happened today would it even be discovered & reported?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watergate case was revealed through the dogged investigation and reporting of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the Washington Post.

The reporters were aided by an informant named "Deep Throat"

This scandal was the most important modern day government conspiracy known to date and so far is still an important historical event that took place.

It is also in my view evidence of course of governement cover-up, corruption and crimes perpetrated by the US Government and would have gone unnoticed were it not for the informant and the Washington post reporters.

Did the current politicians and others learn from this mistake and tweak their methods? What safeguards if any do we have today, and are they working, that are a result from the Watergate scandal?

Background on Watergate:

  • en.wikipedia.org...
  • DEEP THROAT?: www.msnbc.msn.com...
  • 30 Years Later: www.pbs.org...

Yeah it would be noticed and investigated BUT the congressional Republicans would be running defense for the White House instead of playing the elected role of the second arm of government like they did during Watergate. Since then they have abrogated any social or political responsiblity that they once had in a bald faced grab for total power. Nixxon would be too liberal for the republicans today. Scary isn't it? Fortunately conservatism is a reactionary ideology and as such is always a social and political dead end.

Maybe if it was discovered and reported, would the existing president still sit as head of the USA?
