The IRA don't hate America. And believe it or not, they don't hate the British that much either.
Their hate is outweighed by a love. The love of money.
The modern IRA can be directly compared with the Cosa Nostra of the 70s and 80s. It is basically an organised crime syndicate that has used the fight
against the British as a front. Everything, from prostitution, drugs and gambling is run by the IRA. They also have several front companies and are
invovled in everything from taxi companies to household refuse collection services.
Contrary to the opinion of one of the posters here, the IRA was on the backfoot and had no choice but to sue for peace. It's organisation had been
infiltrated by British Intelligence and many key figures were jailed - including their top Quartermaster. Unlike the Cosa Nostra, there is no Omerta
within the IRA and it was falling prey to informants within it's structure who were doing real damage.
Once the IRA had come to the negotiating table a lot of it's money dried up. Although it gleans a large amount through it's criminal activities, it
also relied heavily on foreign donations. The advent of global terrorism meant that funds from NORAID, Libya and rogue governments dried up. It is
therefore necessary for them to court other sources. It is no new development. The IRA has received arms and funds from the Middle East before.
It's nothing personal. It's just about money.
