when i think 80's guitarist worth a mention i think steve vai(went active in the 80's)
satriani...active in like 79 but close enough
jason becker
marty friedman
paul gilbert
john petrucci
richie sambora(no joke)
shawn lane
--------
something to that effect...
don't forget mike keneally

the hair metal/80's metal/shredder type stuff has put out some amazing guitarists.....all those guys mentioned save for sambora and becker(cause of the ALS) and lane(cause he's dead) are virtuoso's.
gilbert teaches at the GIT and puts on clinics all over the place. friedman runs a guitar school in japan and puts on clinics. petrucci, satch and vai do clinics....these guys theory goes deep.
some mentioned earlier could write some riffs and whatever sure but in the 80's eara, these guys all busted it.
they changed things...

I'm gona stray a bit from "hair" metal but...

Although some of them didn't make it very far, they were still great guitar players. I'm still fairly young but even so, I love some of the older rock/metal music from the hairband era. Def Leppard and Quiet Riot to name a couple. I also like some of Metallica and Testament's music. Some crazy lead guitar riffs there.
