A personal letter from the Queen wasn't the first thing that Alec Holden opened on his 100th birthday this morning.
As well as Her Majesty's gilt-edged message, Mr Holden also took delivery of a cheque for £25,000 from bookmakers William Hill for reaching his century.
Mr Holden wagered £100 at odds of 250 to 1 that he would get to triple figures, placing his bet 10 years ago at a time when bookies were prepared to offer generous odds. The five-figure payout is the largest of its kind.
"And keep breathing - stop that and you're in real trouble.
"But these age wagers are starting to cost us a fortune and from now on we are going to push out the age to 110.
