British Man Wins £25,000 in Wager After Becoming a Centenarian

A personal letter from the Queen wasn't the first thing that Alec Holden opened on his 100th birthday this morning.

As well as Her Majesty's gilt-edged message, Mr Holden also took delivery of a cheque for £25,000 from bookmakers William Hill for reaching his century.

Mr Holden wagered £100 at odds of 250 to 1 that he would get to triple figures, placing his bet 10 years ago at a time when bookies were prepared to offer generous odds. The five-figure payout is the largest of its kind.

Good for him! Seems like a pretty good bet. I bet the odds given aren't so great anymore if this bet is still offered.

Seems like 250 to 1 was a bit more than generous odds in 1997. Unless he had doctors saying there was no chance he would make it that long or something.

"And keep breathing - stop that and you're in real trouble.

"But these age wagers are starting to cost us a fortune and from now on we are going to push out the age to 110.

If someone had the data available to them it would make for an interesting study to graph the number of people reaching age 110 over the past 100yrs or so. Moreso to overlay it with the number that have retained mental faculties at that age.
