From CNN

AP) -- A "full-scale riot" broke out Tuesday at a medium-security men's prison, according to the mayor, and pictures taken from television helicopters showed at least two fires burning in the courtyard.

Indiana Department of Correction spokeswoman Java Ahmed confirmed there was a disturbance at the New Castle Correctional Facility, about 43 miles east of Indianapolis. She said more than one cell house was involved, and two staff members were injured.

The Department of Corrections sent emergency squads and county and state police to the prison. New Castle Mayor Tom Nipp said the entire city police force had also been activated. Helicopter pictures also showed police in riot gear standing outside the prison fence.

A private sector company running the jail. Why am I not surprised?

I look forward to further details as to what set this off.

Seems like the prisoners in the jail were upset that new prisoners from other states were coming into THIER prison.

How about you don't go to jail in the first place?

So take a look at what happens to U.S. federal prisoners in the case of civil insurrection or martial law. That makes you want to stay out of jail, too...

I'm watching this on TV as I type, I live less than a hour from New Castle, IN. This is Indiana's only privately run prison. This is a minimum security prison. There are no major injuries and all seems to be coming under control as of now. This is a prison that was housing some inmates from Arizona ( approx 600), seems Arizona has a serious overcrowding and this prison was running well under capitacy so Arizona has been paying Indiana to house these guys.

Nah, con's are con's, they have a lot more in common than where they are from. I can't see this as being a reason to riot, let alone in a medium security jail. A private company running a prison and skimping on the quality of food? I can see that. Not enough staff on and it shuts down visits and programs, I can see that.

Prisons are NOT an industry set up to make money, they are set up to LOSE money, for security's sake. Privatizing them are a recipe for disaster. Private companies are out to make money. WRONG industry.

This was not a Federal Center. If it was many prisoners would be shot dead by now. The Federal Government does not lease out their prisons to private corporations anymore, only the State prisons still do.

The Federal Government owns its own corporation to run the prisons, and they do a mighty fine job at it.
