The reason I started this thread is because so much credence is being given to this quote to many different websites and pages, sometimes the quote is changed in a way to lend more support for a particular website or story.

If Einstein is responsible for such a statement, then logically there must be a solid source of the quote. A book, a letter, a speech transcript, an interview something to show that he did in fact say this.

Is it important to find out IF Einstein said this? Yes because regardless that Einstein was not a biologist, nor a specialist in bees, many, many people hold whatever Einstein said in high regard. If this is not an authentic quote, then that would mean some hoaxer came up with the quote, and many people would be listening to an unknown person with unknown credentials and unknown intentions.

I have an e-book with Einstein quotes in and this one is indeed in it.

Can you tell more about the ebook? Title author etc. Also is this available via a link somewhere? E-book's are not a valid source unless its original source material, and can be verified, anyone can make an e-book...So I'd be interested in researching this more, thanks!

UPDATE:

Found some information this time from an Einstein 'expert', if you can define an Einstein expert as being someone that wrote six books on the scientist. Her name is Alice Calaprice and among the books is one called "The quotable Einstein".

QUOTE FROM HERE: www.markturner.net.../2223

Also on the Internet is a quote attributed to Albert Einstein on how humans would die off in four years if not for honeybees. It's wrong on two counts.

First, Einstein probably never said it, according to Alice Calaprice, author of "The Quotable Einstein" and five other books on the physicist.

"I've never come across it in anything Einstein has written," Calaprice said. "it could be that someone had made it up and put Einstein's name on it."

Second, it's incorrect scientifically, [U.S. Department of Agriculture bee researcher Jeff] Pettis said. There would be food left for humans because some food is wind-pollinated.

*SNIP* Alice Calaprice, as author of "The Quotable Einstein" is probably in a better position to know an Einstein quote when she saw it.

So does this throw the final nail in the coffin on this possible internet myth? In my view it certainly does. Not only this evidence against, but the shear LACK of evidence showing that Einstein DID in fact state this quote and the dubious showing of the quote at an opportune time coinciding with a bee dieoff.

Einstein was prophetic with many of his ideas. He figured out the blue and red shift an observer sees when the speed of light is approaching/leaving them at the age of 12 while riding a bicycle.

Since this quote cannot be conclusively shown to be from Einstein I think it's urban legend.
Honey bees are not the only pollinating bees. However they are the only type of bee to sufferer colony collapse disorder. Yes, it seems there will be less food...one kind...honey.

I think someone wanted to make a point and used the esteemed reputation of Einstein to forward his/her message and it took on a life of it's own.

The quote is credited to Einstein for credibility purposes only as there is little evidence or source material to support the claim. It is interesting though to note it's reference in the recent film "The Happening" and it's connection to the end of the world....roughly four years from now on 12/21/2012.
