Einstein Quote or Hoax/Rumor?

<<  1    2    3  >>

Imho it doesn't matter if he said what is quoted or not.

Einstein was a mathematician and physicist, not a biologist or ecologist.

Its like expecting your house dokter to be up to date on the latest of quantum mechanics or by default believing all his claims about that field without having him show some credentials in that field too.

I've been wondering if I should change the quote in my signature, I think this one would be pretty good.

There are loads and loads of quotes around... Einstein said this, Einstein said that...

Einstein was a genius but he was also a human who had emotions and flaws just like everyone else...

Having said that here are a few of my most favourite non science based Einstein quotes.

"Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love."

"The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax."

"I am convinced that He (God) does not play dice."

"Sometimes one pays most for the things one gets for nothing."
(Sch'n-word' Sch'n-word' had Einstein visited a lady of the night??)

"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."

"The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources."

"The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education."

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe."

"The release of atom power has changed everything except our way of thinking...the solution to this problem lies in the heart of mankind. If only I had known, I should have become a watchmaker."

I can go on....

But I won't unless asked

As to the bees, I very much doubt Einstein would have said such a thing, though if I'm honest I would say I can't give a definitive answer. I've been in the field of physics for some 15 years now and I've not heard of the quote before recent days.

I maybe wrong but It certainly doesn't sound like the sort of thing Einstein would have said.

Not only does this statement show a defeatist attitude, (something Einstein did not aspire to), but also shows a lack of understanding about how natures works.

Although if we were to suddenly loose our bees... there would indeed be a noticeable decrease in crop yield, however there are other pollinators that would be sufficient to keep the food chain intact.

Besides... we are moving away from natural growth as a source of food.

Lab-grown steaks nearing the menu

Would you eat lab-grown meat?

For those that don't know about pollination, you may read the following.

Pollination

Anyway..

All the best,

NeoN HaZe.

I don't get the point of this thread... Ok we all want to know if einstein said this or not, to me whats important is why he said it not IF he said it, can anyone come up with the context in which he said this, where did this conclusion come from ? If you can find those answers, you could probably say if the quote is authentic or not.

What I have always learnt is that bees find there way by using the sun, so if the sun "changed" no longer visible or too close (which doesn't sound good), then the bees would literaly get lost, and die by not being able to find their hive. And if something happens to the sun, well that doesn't sound to good for humans.

Yes this quote was from Einstein..

I don't think he was on to something, great minds with so much "excess" brainpower tend to think about everything lol.

It's the same as the quote about spiders.. also true (can't remember who said it right now)
It says if spiders would dissappear right now we'd be up to our knees in flies and other pests within a year.
It's often used in schools to teach why spiders aren't bad monsters and why we should respect them (and everything living on this planet)

Now you have really done it. Started a paradox that even Einnie couldn't solve.

It is important not to know IF he said but WHY he said it...but IF he didn't say it then there was never a WHY in the first place. Follow?

Einstein was a physicist not an entomologist, life existed before bee's.

I don't mean to derail the thread... but once again this puts the 'end' right around 2012 (why won't this date just disappear?)

Which book is this, and does it have a source (like "letters to Anna, May 1933" or some such?)

I'm betting that Einstein never said it. There's no source book or collection ever given to that quote, and he didn't know that much about biology.

There are slightly fewer than 20,000 known species of bee, though many are undescribed and the actual number is probably higher.

Not every plant, oh say none at all, actually require bees to pollenate, bees just make it more efficient.

Humans could technologically overcome a lack of bees anyway.

ummm, wrong

einstein quote or not....doesn't matter

heres a quote for you

"The earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood which unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself."-Chief Seattle

Regardless, anyone who doesn't think the disappearance of the bees is serious business are only fooling themselves. It will have both a sustainment and economic impact.

I agree with you, Byrd, because I was intrigued by the question to search through Google trying to find evidence of him actually having written it. However after a bunch of pages, I couldn't find anything.

Somebody said it, though, and everybody attributes it to Einstein.

All this talk about nuclear war, biological attacks, outbreaks of diseases and in the end the dissapearance of the bees is what does us in!!! Amazing how fragile the earth is and how every animal serves a purpose. Also amazing is how humans feel the need to kill everything we see.

Hikix, that's like the story with the extinction of the Leopards in Russia. As I stated on that thread, "Humans are careless." I also stated that I believe there is a day of reckoning for mankind fast approaching, and it's not going to be pretty.

I have actually used this quote several times in several places.

I am not entirely sure as to when it was said, where it was said, (and to avoid any paradoxical interference), if it was said by Einstein at all.

This ''blind faith' in my quoting quoting what may or may not have been said is important to those scholarly types, and I commend you in maintaining the right to enforce doubt upon the intellectual property of this quote.

However, I feel that regardless of whether this was an actual quote or urban legend ,) it has certainly served as a focal point to further the main cause of informing others of a possibly dying species, in order to make people think and question for themselves what is in fact the truth.

I am also certain, that Einstein had many friends, and they may have discussed issues such as this on the regular!

The quote, if cited in 'The Scotsman' would certainly prove to be a credible source, but if it is a hoax, from a personal standpoint although it is wrong to do so, I don´t really care, as it has achieved what it needed to, that being to alert everyday people to this worrying phenomenon.

Also whoever did say/invent this, could be quoting a fact, even if it takes longer than the allotted time, so we may well be losing a crucial element to the delicate balance of an ecosystem, and THIS time juuuust this time, it may have a visible and most tangible impact upon mankind...

I'd like to think Einstein did say this, and if he didnt, what do present day specialists think of regarding statement?

Even if Bees should die out (North America) This is not a world wide problem.
Only one-third of the human diet is derived from insect-pollinated plants. So don't panic yet guys.

Sounds like a problem with the Varrora Mite. Not the end of the world.

many thousands of crops are cross polinatted by the wind and other species of bees not just the Amrican Honey Bee.

Bees arn't the only pollinators in the world beetles, flies, wasps, thrips, butterflies and moths are all successful pollinators.

Doubtful. There have been times in the past when this has been due o a mite problem, but they identified it relatively quickly. This time, they still don't have any definite clues as to what is causing it.
