NEW YORK - One million new trees will join the urban landscape of New York City by the year 2017 to reduce air pollution, cool temperatures and help improve the city's long term sustainability, officials said Saturday.

Interesting article.

The article states NYC currently has 24% tree cover (that's higher than some U.S. montane wilderness areas). The scientific definition of a forest is 10% tree cover, so if you could magically remove all the concrete and asphalt the remaining trees would be a forest.

Of course, NYC is classified as an urban area, so it is excluded from the national statistics for forested land.
