'Virtual umbrella' to shelter astronauts
www.guardian.co.uk
British scientists are developing a force-field to protect astronauts and spacecraft from the hazards they may encounter on future missions to
the moon, mars and beyond. Although the shield is unlikely to withstand a full-on assault from the Klingons, it is designed to act as a "virtual
umbrella" to shelter astronauts and sensitive electronics from the violent blasts of radiation that erupt from the sun. (visit the link for

I thought that NASA already had some sort of shielding in place on the shuttles. Either way, sounds pretty interesting.

This is a good news to hear about.
The problems associated with radiation have always been one of the
major factors in planning long term human spaceflight, and magnetic
field shielding has always been one of the front runner options for
dealing with this problem, so I'm glad it's actually being developed now.
Another thing that it is good for that is not mentioned in the article, is if
you have a ship traveling at high speeds, the magnetic field would act
as a deflector for most of the things in front of the ship, thusly dimini-
shing the chances of a catastrophic collision, even if the object is only
the size of a pea.

Interesing additional info, iori.
Yes, I also thought that this was something positive, that is why I decided to post it.
Too much doom and gloom these days.
