Glancing Asteroid Impact Responsible for Destruction of Atlantis, Deluge Myth Tsunamis

I was just skimming through some computer simulation studies by Gisler, Weaver and Gittings, and along with the bathyspheric data from the Azores Plateau, I'm still led to think that the glancing impact of a rocky asteroid in the North Atlantic about 14,000 years ago might offer some good possible explanations for --

* the destruction of a culture located on what is now the sunken Azores Plateau (Atlantis)
* massive tsunamis and shifts in sea levels contributing to worldwide deluge myths
* a relatively rapid end to the last Ice Age, possibly due to a temporary global warming scenario created by debris vaporization (bringing rapidly rising sea levels with it)
* carbon dating of Bimini surface rock samples that suggests they were deposited approximately 14,000 years ago (possibly by tsunami?)
* descendent/emergent cultures in Sumeria, Egypt and Central America developing a very intense interest in astronomy and astrology - hoping to spot and avoid future catastrophes, perhaps

-- among other curiosities.

Even Plato, in Timaeus, specifically brings up the notion of destruction from the sky when discussing Atlantis, as a long-recognized cause of catastrophe:

There have been, and will be again, many destructions of mankind arising out of many causes; the greatest have been brought about by the agencies of fire and water, and other lesser ones by innumerable other causes. There is a story, which even you have preserved, that once upon a time Paethon, the son of Helios, having yoked the steeds in his father's chariot, because he was not able to drive them in the path of his father, burnt up all that was upon the earth, and was himself destroyed by a thunderbolt. Now this has the form of a myth, but really signifies a declination of the bodies moving in the heavens around the earth, and a great conflagration of things upon the earth, which recurs after long intervals; at such times those who live upon the mountains and in dry and lofty places are more liable to destruction than those who dwell by rivers or on the seashore.

Without knowing anything about asteroid impacts, Plato was able to provide a pretty good description of them, even noting the astrophysical truth that is the basis of the myth.

Rather than leave large chunks of material or recognizable craters, a rocky asteroid or comet would tend to vaporize in the atmosphere and ocean, creating a destructive shockwave without leaving much identifiable solid material behind.

Researchers attempting to find remants of a relatively advanced civilization in the Azores Islands would naturally be out of luck, since they would be searching what used to be the peaks of relatively high mountains scrubbed clean by tsunamis and landslides.

Azores bathyspheric data shows possible sites of flat plains, and protected harbors, including a curious circular harbor which could have been the site of the capitol city described in Criteas.

As we become more aware of the potential for destructive asteroid or comet impacts, and understand the tremendous possible scope of such events, the more we may see that while an individual volcanic explosion or earthquake might not be big enough to account for the loss of a large island like Atlantis and its culture, a relatively small asteroid/comet impact could easily do the job.

An impact starts to tie a lot of the myth and previous study together, and is a very strong starting point for a hypothesis for further investigation.

Assuming an impact just south of current Greenland, possible avenues for exploration include finding evidence of tsunami activity pinpointed to around 14,000 years ago in the Caribbean Islands and along the northern coast of South America. Finding this kind of evidence may be difficult, since tsunamis are of such short duration. The focus might be on finding out of place debris piles and deposits dating from that time.

Who knows?

This is good. Most people dont realize that every major asteroid/comet impact is different. They aren't all straight on hits. Sometimes they come in at strange angles. Sometimes they expload before hitting the ground, such as in Tunguska, Siberia. Sometimes they hit land, sometimes they hit water, both are dynamic. Also every asteroid has a different size, and thus a differing catastrophic degree.

please link to a map or at least some evidence of this claim
thanks

fyi
*the Ice age took several thousand years to end
it is a poor understanding of that climate that leads to claims that a stellar object had anything to do with its demise
* the descendant cultures you mention didn't achieve civilisation until 6000 years after the fact. Its a little difficult to believe that a bronze age civilisation like atlantis flourished and then because of its demise took all of its advances with it
* dna mapping shows the majority of the human population were all living in central eurasia when the ice age ended. there are no mystery arrivals of unknown dna groups from a sunken civilisation.
* the Azores shows no evidence of geologic upheavel in recent geologic history
* the claim that carbon dating of Bimini surface rock samples suggests they were deposited approximately 14,000 years ago is complete rubbish originated by Greg Little who is head of the A.R.E. Atlantis in Bimini project
as such it is completely fabricated and Greg Little is not much more than a flim flam merchant who most recently has been promoting Andrew Collins the famous pseudohistorian

The sunken portion is the interaction of a big magma plume and the Atlantic Ridge. Not an area where you'd put any city or town, because you'd have constant lava.

* massive tsunamis and shifts in sea levels contributing to worldwide deluge myths

No worldwide deluge myths (this is a myth). Shifts in sea level have always been quite gradual.

* a relatively rapid end to the last Ice Age, possibly due to a temporary global warming scenario created by debris vaporization (bringing rapidly rising sea levels with it)

There's no evidece of global debris (as with the K-T boundary asteroid. And 'rapid' was a period of a thousand years or so.

Got link?

Not at 14000 BC. They were still wandering hunter-gatherers like the rest of the world and left no sign that they were overly interested in star watching.

Rather than leave large chunks of material or recognizable craters, a rocky asteroid or comet would tend to vaporize in the atmosphere and ocean, creating a destructive shockwave without leaving much identifiable solid material behind.

The mass of these "shockwave only" asteroids is pretty darn small. Too small to have climactic effects.

Researchers attempting to find remants of a relatively advanced civilization in the Azores Islands would naturally be out of luck, since they would be searching what used to be the peaks of relatively high mountains scrubbed clean by tsunamis and landslides.

But they'd find evidence of trade throughout the area. No such luck.

That, I believe, turned out to be the mouth of the volcano.

Anyway, so you don't get inundated with debunkers, I'm moving this to Skunk Works.

Rubbish created by Greg Little, hey Marduk?

Not surprising.

Yours truly, Ishtar.
